Target In Sight Tops 2015 Ortensia Stakes Field & Odds

Joe Pride’s Group 3 winner Target In Sight has opened favourite in a bumper field to win the last at Scone Racecourse on Saturday, the Ortensia Stakes 2015.

A handicap clash for the late autumn sprinters, this year’s $140,000 Listed Arrowfield Ortensia Stakes (1100m) is set to run as Scone Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST) on Saturday’s Dark Jewel Classic Day program.

A capacity field is set to face off in the race too with 16 confirmed starters plus four emergencies all drawn in double digits.

Heading the latest Ortensia Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.20 for the win is the nicely-drawn Target In Sight who is set to jump from an ideal barrier two draw with James McDonald in the saddle.

Pride’s Nadeem gelding won the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) three back before a second in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) a fortnight later and a last start sixth behind Our Boy Malachi in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 18.

There are four other single figure hopes in the Ortensia Stakes odds including Dothraki ($7) who has a horror barrier 18 draw to overcome.

Peter & Paul Snowden’s super-consistent Mossman four-year-old has finished out of the money just five times over 19 career starts to date and was last seen running third to Barbed in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) in late December.

It’s been a long time between runs then for the gelding but the bookmakers are taking no chances with him this weekend as he returns to the track.

Also under $10 for the win are the David Pfieffer-trained Northern Meteor mare Atmospherical ($7.50) out to atone for her eighth in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes last start, Bart & James Cummings’ recent Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes winner Shamalia ($8) and Private Secretary ($9.50).

Husson mare Private Secretary is prepared at Warwick Farm by Gregory Hickman and boasts six wins, a second and two thirds from her 10 starts so far.

This weekend she’s up in class but looks a genuine hope after winning back-to-back Sydney sprints earlier this campaign before a sixth over 1200m at Randwick last time out she’s out to atone for.

Outside the first five in the markets are then the likes of Team Snowden’s Flying Spur gelding That’s A Good Idea ($10), the Kris Lees-trained Group 3 winning Red Ransom mare Thump ($14) racing for the first time since her dead last when 13th to Plucky Belle in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in mid-March and veteran nine-year-old Zaratone ($17) representing better value for punters after an upset.
