Dances On Stars ran on for an impressive third amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast three weeks ago, and trainer Gerald Ryan is confident he will line up for Saturday’s Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1300m) on the Sunshine Coast in peak condition.
The Snitzel gelding is yet to finish outside the first three in his four starts on the Gold Coast but has always failed to fire a fortnight later in Brisbane events; most recently when unable to match the late pace in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) after taking out the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) in 2014.
Confident he is capable of carrying a race-high 59kgs effectively in the 23015 Glasshouse Handicap, Ryan is thrilled with the condition of Dances On Stars and is confident he will perform to a high standard from the wide barrier 17 on the Sunshine Coast.
“He looks really good, probably the best I’ve ever seen the horse look,” Ryan told Racing Ahead.
“He’s working good and he’s always run well on the Gold Coast on Prime Minister’s Cup Day; three years in a row he won, race second and ran third in the major races up there.
“His next run has always been a bit flat but it was always only a fortnight later at Doomben we ran him so that’s why this year we’ve given him three weeks between that race and this race.
“58kgs is as much as the horse likes to carry, he’s only a little fella.
“One thing I’ve learnt about the Sunshine Coast is you don’t scratch because of wide barriers because it’s one of the best tracks in Australia.
“If they can run on there on Saturday with the speed that looks to be in the race he’ll be hitting the line really hard.”
Yet to set a specific path for the five-year-old beyond the Glasshouse Handicap, Ryan said he will definitely consider a berth in the featured Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) for Dances On Stars should he win on Saturday.
“If he happened to win on Saturday I wouldn’t be frightened to run away from the Stradbroke with him, it would be three weeks into the Stradbroke,” he said.
“If not, he’d probably run in the QTC Cup in a fortnight and then go three weeks into the Healy Stakes on the Gold Coast on the 23rd of June.”
A talented field of 17 has been confirmed for the 2015 Glasshouse Handicap, and Dances On Stars currently figures as sole occupant of the third line of betting at Ladbrokes.com.au at generous $7 odds.
