2015 Scone Cup Betting & Tips

This Friday the always popular Scone Cup 2015 takes place with betting tips on the mile classic found below.

A field of 16 middle distance gallopers is set to face off in this year’s $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m), which jumps as Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST) at Friday’s Scone Cup Day meeting.

Of the horses making up the final Scone Cup field the favourite in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is hard to determine with a wide open affair featuring six horses paying between $7 and $8.50 for the win.

Currently sharing top spot in the odds at $7 each are Strawberry Boy and Tales Of Grimm drawn in barriers seven and three respectively.

Chris Waller prepares Jim Cassidy’s mount Strawberry Boy who is second-up on Friday on the back of a fifth behind stablemate Rugged Cross in the Royal Randwick 100 (1400m) last month, the Redoute’s Choice six-year-old boasting a good record over the mile of two wins and a third from three starts.

The Sam Kavanagh-trained Tales Of Grimm is also a six-year-old but is an import having just his fourth run down under, the latest of which was a seventh in the same race Strawberry Boy comes from when beaten only 1.6 lengths.

Occupying the second line of Scone Cup betting at an equal $7.50 are then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pheidon to be ridden by the in-form Blake Shinn, a winner of five at Doomben last weekend including the two Group 1 cup races, and San Diego out wide in gate 15 for jockey Sam Clipperton.

Al Maher four-year-old Pheidon comes off a first-up win at Warwick Farm on a Heavy (9) track earlier this month, his first start since running dead last when 16th in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in Perth last December.

San Diego meanwhile comes off a second in a Benchmark 95 over 1350m at Rosehill last Saturday, the John O’Shea-trained Exceed And Excel gelding after his first win since February.

The last two single figure hopes are then O’Shea’s Teofilo four-year-old Malice ($8) in gate four with James McDonald booked for the ride and Darci Magic ($8.50) coming off a mile win at Randwick and after his third victory from four recent runs.

So do the bookies have the predicted Scone Cup results correct?

Will it be a super tight affair by the best in betting or is there an upset on the agenda for Friday afternoon’s feature race?

1st

#3 Pheidon ($7.50)

Waterhouse’s up-and-comer is racing at Scone for the first time but has had three previous looks at this distance for a win and a second. His form in the sprint was good including the second in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown, and you can ignore the failed Group 1 in Perth that he should never have been taken over for. Has fitness on his side after a first-up Warwick Farm win in the wet over the mile and if he can run as good as that day is great value. The Shinn factor also comes into play after his flying efforts in Brisbane last weekend.

2nd

#6 Kaypers ($21)

Really nice price on this Greg Bennett-trained seven-year-old who looks over the odds. He’s had three previous Scone runs including a third place finish when running a cracking race in the Scone Cup two years ago, and while it’s been a long time between drinks for the veteran his last start second over 1400m in the Tamworth Cup was good. He’ll appreciate the extra metres up over a mile here and the drop back from 59kg to 54kg, five kilos coming off. He’s on the improve despite his years and on the comeback trail so watch for him in the finish.

3rd

#8 San Diego ($7.50)

So many livewire chances to fill the placings but plenty of boxes ticked by this Godolphin-raced four-year-old who has a win over the mile already on the record. Two back was fourth in the Royal Ranwick 100 and then finished second to You’ll Never over 1350m only last Saturday at Rosehill. On the short back-up but the extra metres will suit and is still a hope even from the draw based on his liking for the 1600m.
