Monton Tops 2015 Scone Cup Field

Ron Quinton’s veteran galloper Monton leads a quality line-up of staying types accepted to face off in the Scone Cup 2015 this Friday in the Scone Cup Carnival’s marquee race.

Due to run as Race 7 at 4:05pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) has attracted a final field of 16 milers with Monton carrying the 59kg top weight.

Drawn in barrier six for Tye Angland to ride, the Catbird eight-year-old debuts at the track in his incredible 61st career start on the back of a solid third when beaten only a length by Pheidon in an open handicap run over the Warwick Farm mile on a Heavy (9) on May 6.

Following Monton in the Scone Cup field and weights are then the Chris Waller-trained Strawberry Boy (58.5kg) and Gai Waterhouse’s Pheidon (57kg) drawn in barriers seven and 10 respectively.

‘The Pumper’ Jim Cassidy rides Waller’s Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Strawberry Boy second-up in the Cup after the Magic Millions Cup runner-up returned when fifth to stablemate Rugged Cross in the Royal Randwick 100 over 1400m on April 18.

Monton’s last start conqueror Pheidon meanwhile is also second-up here, the progressive Al Maher four-year-old having won the Warwick Farm race earlier in the month ahead of just his third second-up assignment this Friday.

Waterhouse has also accepted for Frespanol, drawn in barrier eight with Thomas Huet riding the Choisir four-year-old on the 54kg minimum.

Along with Pheidon, the only other last start winner in the Scone Cup field this autumn is the Bede Murray-trained Darci Magic jumping from gate 11 with Tim Clark in the saddle.

A winner of two of his past three starts, the four-year-old Darci Brahma gelding won over the Randwick mile on Anzac Day and shoots for another 1600m victory on Friday in his first Scone start.

Other hopefuls coming off a nice lead-up include Greg Bennett’s Kaypers and the John O’Shea-trained San Diego.

Cape Cross seven-year-old Kaypers resumed with a second in the Tamworth Cup over 1400m on April 26 and is up in class for the Scone Cup assignment.

San Diego meanwhile was runner-up over 1350m at Rosehill last Saturday, and is one of two in the race for O’Shea and the Godolphin stable who are also represented by Medcaut and Malice.

While San Diego has work to do drawn wide in barrier 15, Commands four-year-old Medcaut has an easier assignment drawn ideally in barrier two as he shoots for his fourth win from seven starts over the mile on a back of a disappointing 10th in the same Rosehill lead-up as his stablemate.

As for Malice, top Sydney jockey James McDonald rides the out-of-form Teofilo four-year-old from a nice barrier four draw with the gelding out to improve on a seventh when beaten over seven lengths in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) at Rosehill last weekend.

Other notable Scone Cup hopes in the line-up this week include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained stablemates Lucky Lago and Great Esteem drawn in barrier 16 and 12 respectively.

Encoasta De Lago mare Lucky Lago comes off a sixth to Pheidon from May 6 while four-year-old Great Esteem is second-up looking to return to the form that saw him win four straight last campaign after a fifth at Hawkesbury on a Heavy (10) over 1300m at the start of the month.
