Trevor Andrews’ triple Group 1 winner Luckygray leads a small field of under 10 starters for this weekend’s Roma Cup 2015 in Western Australia.
There are only nine sprinters in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Del Basso Smallgoods Roma Cup (1200m), which is due to run as Belmont Park Race 7 at 4:17pm (local) on Saturday.
Drawn a treat in barrier two for Shaun O’Donnell to ride, the seven-year-old Bradbury’s Luck gelding is after his first win since the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in November of 2013 over a year and a half ago.
A winner of over $2.58 million in total prize money from 29 starts, Luckygray hasn’t raced since May last year when fourth behind Magnifisio in the same race – the Roma Cup.
He has been sidelined for 12 months but looks set to make a strong comeback after two recent trials this autumn, his lasts a win over 1000m at Belmont on May 11 with O’Donnell aboard.
Also first-up in the Roma Cup on Saturday are the likes of the Adam Durrant-trained Respondent drawn in gate three with apprentice Lucy Warwick riding and the Darren Mcauliffe-trained Fuchsia Bandana set to get the rails run from barrier one.
Haradasun four-year-old Respondent was last seen running sixth to Real Love in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day so will be better when stepped out over more distance later this campaign.
Fuschsia Bandana meanwhile ran fifth in two Group 1s to see out her spring – summer campaign in Perth late last year, the four-year-old daughter of Trade Fair beaten only 1.25 lengths by Elite Belle in the Railway Stakes (1600m) in November and 2.5 lengths by Sydney raider Moriarty in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in December.
Along with the returning Respondent, the Lark Hill-based Durrant also saddles-up his veteran eight-year-old Ranger who comes off a close fourth when only a length off the winner Dawn Approach in the Listed Northam Stakes (1100m) on May 3.
Northam winner Dawn Approach also backs up in the Roma Cup, Vaughn Sigley’s Statue Of Liberty four-year-old a winner of seven of his 21 career starts.
He is yet to have a run at Belmont Park however, but does have a good record over Saturday’s distance (9-3-1-1).
Runner-up in the same lead-up race, the Grant Williams-trained Shining Knight was beaten only three quarters of a length and will be out to improve when running again this weekend, the Blackfriars six-year-old having won two of his three previous starts at the track.
The Northam Stakes also provides the third-placed Rock Magic from the Ascot stables of Chris Gangemi, the five-year-old boasting four wins and a second from five previous Belmont Park runs.
Along with Dawn Approach the other last start winner on the Roma Cup field meanwhile is the Daniel Morton-trained Zester with the outside alley on Saturday the rising nine-year-old Danewin gelding having saluted over 1400m at Ascot on April 18.
