Dances On Stars Leads 2015 Glasshouse Handicap Field

Gerald Ryan’s smart Sydney raider Dances On Stars is set to carry the top weight in the Glasshouse Handicap 2015 field at the Sunshine Coast on Caloundra Cup Day this weekend.

A final field of 17 gallopers will face off in the Sunshine Coast Race 7 at 4:02pm (AEST) on Saturday, Dances On Stars carrying the number one saddlecloth and 58kg top weight in the $175,000 Listed HMR Projects Pty Ltd Glasshouse Handicap (1300m).

Ace Queensland jockey Damian Browne has the ride on Ryan’s Snitzel five-year-old, Dances On Stars suffering an early blow with the outside barrier 17 draw to overcome.

He comes off a close third when under two lengths off Srikandi in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at the Gold Coast on April 25, but had gate five and 58.5kg that day.

Ryan has enjoyed good success in the ‘Sunshine State’ with Dances On Stars who has won more than half his $536,000 in prize money in Queensland, and hopes to continue that with a possible $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) run at Doomben calling next month.

“He is the sort of horse who races best a bit fresh so we decided to give him an extra week and go three weeks between runs,” Ryan told AAP this week.

“He has done really well up there as he always does.

“The biggest worry is the weight he will have to carry (on Saturday) but he will have Damian Browne aboard and that’s a plus.

“If he won the Glasshouse we would consider the Stradbroke but you need a horse in form to win a race like that.”

The second heaviest weighted with 55.5kg is then the Robert Heathcote-trained Riva De Lago returning to racing and looking to break a notable drought from the inside alley with 55.5kg on his back in the form of hoop Luke Nolen.

The only other two hopes weighted above the 54kg minimum are then Jason McLachlan’s former star juvenile Phelan Ready (55kg) out in barrier 16 and the super-consistent Mount Nebo (54.5kg) last seen running fourth to Mr Favulous in the Listed Weetwood Handicap (1200m) at Toowoomba on May 2.

Also drawn wide are the likes of the Stuart Kendrick-trained Snitzel colt Time For War (barrier 14) and Choice Bro (barrier 13).

Locally trained, three-year-old Time For War has won three of his 10 starts to date and was last seen running second behind Nostradamus in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on April 25.

Choice Bro meanwhile is prepared by the Toowoomba-based Tony Sears, the Choisir five-year-old coming off a Weetwood Handicap third when ridden by Paul Hammersley who stays on this weekend.

Sears has also accepted for Pillar Of Creation, drawn better in barrier two for in-form apprentice Luke Tarrant, the God’s Own gelding runner-up in the Weetwood when beaten only a length in the Glasshouse Handicap lead-up.

Other notable hopes in the field include the consistent Tony Pike-trained Allez Eagle over from New Zealand for the first time, Liam Birchely’s first-up hope Black Jet who won back-to-back races over the Doomben mile in February and local five-year-old Not Too Sure for trainer Natalie Mccall.
