With no racing happening in Brisbane on Saturday, the action of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival moves up the coast for a top day’s racing headlined by the three-year-olds facing off in the $125,000 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

There are 21 early entries for this year’s Sunshine Coast Guineas including eight fillies nominated to take on the boys in the set weights clash.

The top rated of the female gallopers is Waller’s daughter of Street Cry Winx who is second favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au behind stablemate Ballet Suite in the pre-field odds for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben Racecourse on May 30.

While the Sunshine Coast Guineas isn’t the traditional Oaks lead-up, Waller is happy with his decision to bypass the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) on May 23 and run her over the mile instead with the amended Oaks distance this winter.

Winx was last seen running second to Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 11, and how she handles the drop back to 1600m this weekend will be crucial to her chances.

The other top fillies in the mix include Liam Birchley’s last start winning Kiwi import Elusive Catch in her debut down under, consistent local Hawaydah and John Sargent’s grey daughter of O’Reilly Swift Lady coming off a Randwick win over the mile on Anzac Day.

One of the sure-to-be-favourites if accepted is the John Zielke-trained colt Worthy Cause shooting for his third win on the trot.

The local Sunshine Coast-based son of Choisir won over 1350m at Doomben two back before his big two length win in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast on AD Hollindale Stakes Day.

Other last start winners include the Matthew Dunn-trained Buckin The Blues, Bruce Hill’s Gold Coast-based Eljetem, fellow Gold Coaster Rhodin Drive who ran fifth in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) back in March and Sambuca Shot.

Also of note are the likes of Crown Oaks performed filly Game Of Fame for local horseman Jason McLachlan, Kiwi import Lucoblu now prepared by Paul Duncan on the Sunshine Coast and the Michael Moroney-trained Merion.

O’Reilly gelding Merion has run exclusively in Group company in his four most recent runs since February with highlights including a sixth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington, a Group 3 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) third at Rosehill and a last start third to Hi World in Randwick’s Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) on April 18.

Other big name interstate visitors include the lightly-raced Gai Waterhouse-trained Skylimit having just his fourth start and coming off a second to Jumbo Prince in the Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) from May 2, and Peter Moody’s Gunsynd Classic fourth placed Sebring colt Ulmann.
