Ballet Suite has rocketed to the top of the early Queensland Oaks 2015 odds for the end of month Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival classic after the Chris Waller-trained filly won the Princess Stakes over the weekend.
The daughter of High Chaparral was fourth past the post behind Fenway in Sydney’s Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) in late March and then eighth when running below par in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) over the mile and a half at Randwick on April 11 earlier this autumn.
Ballet Suite however bounced back when she returned to the track last Saturday for her Queensland race debut at Doomben Racecourse on Cup Day in the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m).
It was a narrow quarter-length win over Bohemian Lily in the end but the bookies at Ladbrokes.com.au saw enough from the Princes Stakes winner to elevate her to the top of the markets for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) run back at Doomben on May 30.
Ballet Suite is now the $6 top fancy for the Oaks, a race Waller is yet to prepare the winner of.
Having been up since a win at Randwick in Februay, Waller is wary of over racing Ballet Suite ahead of the Brisbane Group 1 and has hinted at taking her straight into the Oaks without another lead-up.
“I am mindful of not going to the well one too many times so I will probably bypass the Roses and wait the extra week for the Oaks,” Waller told the press on Saturday.
The traditional Oaks lead-up, the $175,000 Group 2 The Roses (2000m) runs on Doomben 10,000 Day on May 23 and has produced the Queensland Oaks winner the past four years on the trot with the last to complete the double being Scarlett Lady (2011).
Ballet Suite is followed in the markets by the fellow Waller-trained Winx, who is also high up in the markets to take on the boys the weekend after on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 6, in the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m).
Winx pays $6.50 in futures Queensland Oaks betting, the daughter of Street Cry finishing runner-up in the ATC Oaks last time out ahead of her next run in Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).
Waller is following a non-traditional path with Winx into the Oaks, something the master horseman is aware of but not concerned by.
“With Winx, I know it’s a bit unorthodox, but it’s a bit different this year with the Oaks being 2200m and she has been to the 2400m already in Sydney so I think the 1600m race will be the best fit to have her right for the Oaks here,” he said, speaking of the move from Eagle Farm to Doomben and the amended distance of the Group 1 fillies’ feature.
Just one other filly is at single figures in the latest Queensland Oaks betting markets with Platinum Witness at $8.50 for the win.
A visiting Kiwi prepared at Awapuni by Lisa Latta, California Dane filly Platinum Witness was last seen running second to Savaria in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) on March 14.
Other notable hopes in the early Queensland Oaks markets include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Princess Stakes runner-up Bohemian Lily ($10), Exquisite Jewel ($11), the John Sargent-trained recent Randwick winner over a mile Swift Lady ($11), Kris Lees’ Snitzel filly Rustic Melody ($12), Sebrina ($12) and Ungrateful Ellen ($12).
