The next Group 1 feature of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival runs at Morphettville Racecourse this weekend with The Goodwood 2015 taking centre stage, nominations and early odds on the sprint classic now out.
A total of 38 gallopers make up the early entries for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m), the early favourite in the pre-field betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au being Group 1 winner Hucklebuck.
Phillip Stokes’ locally-trained Elvstorem four-year-old is undefeated at the track and distance with two previous 1200m wins at Morphettville, and also has a gun overall record over the 1200m of three wins and a third from four runs.
Hucklebuck is also at Group 1 winner in Melbourne having taken out the Emirates Stakes over the mile at Flemington during the spring last year, that November 8 run also his last start.
In the latest The Goodwood odds, Hucklebuck is at $4.80 to resume racing and win the Group 1 first-up.
He is followed in the markets by three other single figure hopes including the Darren Weir-trained Husson five-year-old Lucky Hussler ($5.50) and the ultra-consistent Black Heart Bart ($6) for Lark Hill’s Vaughn Sigley.
Weir won The Goodwood two years ago with talented mare Platelet (2013) and Lucky Hussler is his best hope of getting the job done again this weekend, the Emirates Stakes runner-up having won the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley first-up in late March.
His latest run was at Randwick on April 18 in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) where he was far from disgraced running only just over a length away sixth to the now-retired Dissident.
Weir has also nominated Scarlet Billows and Trust In a Gust who was scratched from last weekend’s BTC Cup in Brisbane due to injury.
It was only a minor setback for the dual Group 1 winning Keep The Faith stallion however, who could still miss the Goodwood before making a comeback in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) Saturday week.
Blackfriars four-year-old Black Heart Bart meanwhile doesn’t have the same Group 1 winning form heading into The Goodwood, but his Win / Place rate is excellent.
Earlier this year during the summer – autumn season he won four on the trot in black type company back home in WA, the latest being on March 8 at Bunbury.
How that form stacks up against the eastern state competitors however will be key to his chances if accepted into The Goodwood field.
Rounding out the single figure fancies at $9 is then Under The Louvre at $9, the Robert Smerdon-trained Excellent Art stallion boasting six wins and three thirds from 10 previous 1200m runs.
Saturday will be his maiden run in Adelaide, the four-year-old last seen running second behind Amorino in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield on April 18.
Smerdon has won two previous editions of The Goodwood with Bomber Bill (2003) and Lone Rock (2011) and along with Under The Louvre this year his other nominee is four-year-old Street Sense mare Politeness.
The other best fancied The Goodwood hopes in the current markets include Robbie Laing’s Danerich stallion Lord Of The Sky ($11) last seen running second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1200m) at Randwick in early April and John Sadler’s William Reid runner-up Vain Queen ($12) looking to atone for a seventh to Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Robert Sangster (1200m) on May 2.
The next best in at $13 David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Robert Sangster runner-up Gregers who was beaten a nose at the track last time out.
