2015 Scone Cup Nominations Feature Flamingo Star

Chris Waller’s German import Flamingo Star is one of the headline nominations taken for Friday’s Scone Cup 2015, the stallion adding an extra level of interest to the popular handicap feature.

Flamingo Star is as yet unraced in Australia, the Areion five-year-old having won four from 16 back in Europe including a Group 3 over the mile in France last time out on October 30.

He has twice been trialled down under in Sydney before popping up as one of 21 nominations for the $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) on Friday.

Waller has two early entries for the lucrative mile showdown, his other possible starter being six-year-old Strawberry Boy last seen running fifth when under a length off Rugged Cross in the Royal Randwick 100 on April 18.

After Waller’s duo the next highest-rated Scone Cup nominees this autumn are the Ron Quinton-trained veteran Monton and Gai Waterhouse’s Pheidon.

Eight-year-old Catbird gelding Monton is in flying form for his age, his latest effort being a close third on a mud track at Warwick Farm over the 1600m on May 6.

Winner of that open handicap, Pheidon is a four-year-old Al Maher gelding on the improve after finishing dead last in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot when taken to Perth back in December last year.

Waterhouse has also entered Choisir four-year-old Frespanol who ran fourth behind his stablemate in that same lead-up run from last week.

Another well-represented stable in the Scone Cup nominations is father-and-son training team Peter & Paul Snowden.

The Snowdens have entered Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Great Esteem who won four on the trot last prep before a first-up fifth on a Heavy (10) over 1300m at Hawkesbury on May 2 and five-year-old Encosta De Lago mare Lucky Lago.

Other Scone Cup hopefuls coming off good form include the Bede Murray-trained Darci Magic who won at Randwick on April 25, John O’Shea’s Exceed And Excel four-year-old San Diego and Pippi’s Pride after his fourth on the trot.

Stephen Gleeson’s Beautiful Crown four-year-old comes off back-to-back country cup victories having completed the Merriwa Cup – Gunnedah Cup double leading into his shot at a third at Scone this Friday.

Local horseman Greg Bennett meanwhile is hopeful again this autumn with his last start Tamworth Cup runner-up Kaypers, the seven-year-old Cape Cross gelding running in the Scone Cup for the third straight year.

In 2013 he was only a half-length away third to Speediness before returning last year only to cross four lengths away sixth behind Cameo.

“I have to say it is a race on the bucket list,” Bennett told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I think everyone wants to win their home-town cup in front of their family and their mates.

“I have only ever had three runners in it and I have a second and a third.

“I took out my licence in 1990 and in that first year, I had Char Night ran second in it to something of Lee Freedman’s.

“It took another 25 odd years to get something good enough and that was Kaypers. Two years ago he ran third to Speediness and Mouro, which was probably one of the best cups.

“Last year, he was at the end of a long prep and did a good job to run sixth. He hasn’t been a champion but he is a very good horse and has won nearly $400,000 for us but the cup would top it off.”

The official 2015 Scone Cup final field and barrier draw will be out on Wednesday so stay tuned.
