Premier Brisbane horseman Robert Heathcote has nominated a livewire chance for the Caloundra Cup 2015 at the Sunshine Coast this weekend with Volkhere one of the headline entries for the staying showdown.
One of the majors on the top eight-race program this weekend in Queensland, the $175,000 Listed Linked Group Plumbing Caloundra Cup (2400m) has attracted 16 early entries including Heathcote’s Dehere six-year-old.
Volkhere hasn’t won a race since a Gold Coast victory over 2200m last October but his recent form has been excellent including his second behind subsequent Doomben Cup winner Pornichet in the Toowoomba Cup (2150m).
The form of that certainly held up last weekend with Pornichet’s Group 1 win in Brisbane and Heathcote is hoping it does again this Saturday with Volkhere.
“I’ve always thought Volkhere was a pretty good stayer and his run in the Toowoomba Cup was very good,” Heathcote told The Courier Mail this week.
“The track is not going to be firm and he is well suited to the give in the ground which we invariably get at the Sunshine Coast at this time of the year even if the weather is fine.
“He will love the 2400m and he is a front running horse, so he ticks a lot of boxes.”
The interstate raiders will be looking to stop a local Queenslander in the Caloundra Cup however with a host of top Sydney visitors among the nominees including Chris Waller’s Index Linked who is the highest rated entry.
A European import with 30 starts to his name, seven-year-old Dansili gelding Index Linked was fifth to Gypsy Diamond in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) two back before his second in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2200m) at the Gold Coast on Anzac Day, a race Volkhere ran third in.
John Thompson also prepares a Sydney Group 2 winner in Zabeel six-year-old Tremec who is based in Brisbane but won over 2600m in the Group 2 Chairman’s at Randwick on April 6 before his run at the Gold Coast in the equivalent race on April 25.
As for the top local hopes they include the Mark Palmer-trained Kobi Creek coming off a 2200m Gold Coast win from last Saturday, the Toby Edmonds-trained High Chaparral mare Monaco Doll who won at Doomben over 2220m last start and Perplexity.
Lonhro five-year-old Perplexity is now prepared by champion Queensland hoop-turned-trainer Chris Munce and comes off a fourth to Epingle in the Chairman’s at the Gold Coast.
Also in the mix are the likes of the Leon & Troy Corstens’ Flemington-trained Pinstripe Lane coming off a fourth to Tooleybuc Kid in the Pakenham Cup (2000m) from April 26, the Peter Moody-trained Sir John Hawkwood and Wimpole Street who ran second to Kobi Creek last time out.
