Queensland Oaks the Target for Princess Stakes Winner Ballet Suite

Talented three-year-old Ballet Suite has justified her clear favouritism in Race 1 at Doomben this morning; completing a perfectly-timed performance to take out the Listed Princess Stakes (2000m) by half a length.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Kerrin McEvoy settled Ballet Suite in prime position within the field of eleven; allowing early leaders Col ‘N’ Lil, No Tricks and Glorious Red to set a reasonable tempo past the post the first time and rounding onto the back straight.

Finding a good rhythm slightly worse than mid-pack and receiving a good run in transit, McEvoy steadily pushed the High Chaparral filly forward around the outside, finding the fore of the field upon reaching the final straight.

Locking in a fierce sprint battle with punters’ pick Bohemian Lily, Ballet Suite responded with an exceptional kick to return to the winner’s circle for the fourth time in her eight start career.

McEvoy delivered a gem of a ride on Ballet Suite for success in the 2015 Princess Stakes and was thrilled to chalk up a win early on Doomben Cup Day.

“It’s riding nicely and it’s nice to kick the day off with a winner,” MvEvoy said.

“She’s a nice, big girl and she’s only thriving through her preparation.”

Ballet Suite failed to make an impact when eighth on a rain-soaked Randwick in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) last start but clearly relished a return to good ground in the Princess Stakes.

“I just think the soft ground at Randwick didn’t really suit her,” McEvoy added.

“Today I was pretty confident that if she ran up to her Vinery run at Rosehill she was going to be very hard to beat.

“I was a couple of pair back off of Blake (Shinn) on Bohemian Lily in the run and tempo was only steadily passing that 100 so I just strode into it passing the 700 and got within close proximity to him.

“I was pretty happy turning for home I’d be able to out dash him over the last two furlongs.”

Trainer Chris Waller was on hand for Ballet Suite’s 2015 Princess Stakes win and confirmed she remains on course for the 2015 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in three weeks’ time.

“Kerrin wasn’t going to be late that’s for sure, but he knew what he had under him,” Waller said.

“It was the right race for her today and she’s a really good filly – she’s a high class filly, I think you’ll see improvement off that.

“It was good to see a better surface today.”
