Nicoscene Wins 2015 Euclase Stakes Ahead of Goodwood Bid

The ultra-consistent Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Nicoscene arrived late in the Euclase Stakes 2015 at Morphettville on SA Derby Day but did enough in the closing stages to beat them home for the Group 2 Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival win.

Ridden by top Melbourne hoop Mark Zahra in this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m), the Nicconi colt posted his fifth win at start number 13 and his first in black-type company.

The Euclase Stakes was Nicoscene’s first in Adelaide, the rest of his form all being back home in Victoria where he was last seen running third behind Sunday Escape in a Benchmark 78 at Caulfield over 1100m.

Appreciating the extra distance today, the smart colt had his 10th look at the 1200m for his fifth win making it his pet distance.

Leading them round in the Group 2 sprint feature was the Doug Harrison-trained Tudor ridden by Dwayne Dunn, with Tony McEvoy’s rails-drawn Risen From Doubt racing second up with Luke Nolen in the saddle settled into second.

Awesome Rock and Get The Nod were the next best in traveling while the race favourite Éclair Choice was caught back and wide, settled a touch worse than midfield and the widest runner round the turn into the home straight.

Coming down the final few hundred metres Tudor ($21) was still there but Nicoscene ($6) was winding up quickly, moving up to take over the lead and win by a length while the Greg Eurell-trained market mover We’ve Got This ($5.50) was a further long head back for third with Damien Oliver aboard.

Last year’s Euclase Stakes winner was the classy filly Miracles Of Life, now prepared by Peter & Paul Snowden, the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes winner backing up to run a disappointing 16th to upset winner Smokin’ Joey in The Goodwood.

One of the majors of the autumn in Adelaide, this year’s lucrative $500,000 Group 1 The Darley Goodwood (1200m) runs back at Morphettville on May 16 and is the likely next-up target for The Euclase Stakes winner Nicoscene.
