Hot Snitzel Scores Upset for Snowden & Shinn in BTC Cup 2015

It really turned into the Blake Shinn show at Doomben Racecourse on Cup Day with the flying hoop posting his fifth win at the meeting and bagging a Group 1 double with his upset victory aboard the Team Snowden-trained Hot Snitzel in the 2015 BTC Cup.

This year’s $500,000 Group 1 Ubet BTC Cup (1200m) featured a field full of talented hopes with the markets at firmly led by the Team Hawkes-trained Our Boy Malachi and last start Victory Stakes winning mare Srikandi.

It was a 31-1 outsider however who stole the show thanks to a beautiful ride from Shinn who also won the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) one race earlier aboard the Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Pornichet.

“Geez when you’re hot you’re hot it’s really a true saying,” an ecstatic Shinn said after the win.

“I really didn’t think we could win this race.

“Neither did Peter (Snowden).

“But it’s amazing Peter’s turned him around to win a Group 1. It’s unbelievable. My first Group 1 for the stable.”

Formerly prepared by Gerald Ryan, the BTC Cup was the first appearance from Snitzel six-year-old Hot Snitzel for Peter & Paul Snowden.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden paid credit to Ryan, saying the galloper came to his stables rock hard fit ahead of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival raid.

“He came to me in perfect order,” Snowden said, quickly paying homage to Shinn’s ride.

“That was really a Blake special ride though.

“He couldn’t have ridden him better. A 50/10 ride.

“He held a perfect spot…a brilliant ride…the difference between winning and losing.”

Even Snowden however didn’t rate Hot Snitzel, last seen running third to Generalife in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 28, a winning BTC Cup hope.

He had an easier raced picked out for him believing the Group 2 QTC Cup (1200m) on May 30 would be his chance at a black type win during the festival.

“He’s not a good track worker,” Snowden explained.

“He was very fresh and well in himself but I thought the QTC Cup the week before the Stradbroke would be the right race for him.”

Snowden though was happy to be proved wrong today, Hot Snitzel too good for his better fancied rivals in the big Group 1 sprint.

“I’m very glad to be wrong today,” he added.

In an early blow for the backers of top mare Srikandi, she and Cape Kidnappers both reared up in the gates and blew their winning chances with a poor start.

First to go from the gates was the eventual BTC Cup winner Hot Snitzel who Shinn had fast away before settling back off the pace set by last start Hall Mark Stakes winner Our Boy Malachi.

The Top Echelon six-year-old, a winner of 17 of his 19 starts before the Group 1 debut, led them rounding after going up quickly to find the front and set a genuine pace.

Hot Snitzel meanwhile was getting a gun run in third just behind the Villa Verde travelling in second.

Our Boy Malachi held his lead onto the straight but Hot Snitzel and Shinn quickly came after him and the fast finishing Knoydart down the outside.

With 50m left to go Hot Snitzel ($31) took the lead and drew away to beat the John O’Shea-trained Knoydart ($18), the More Than Ready five-year-old ridden by James McDonald off a fourth in the Victory Stakes a fortnight ago at the Gold Coast.

In third to complete the BTC Cup trifecta was the beaten short-priced favourite Our Boy Malachi ($3.30) who held on for a minor place but who had no excuses having had a soft lead throughout.

“The speed was quite genuine,” winning hoop Shinn said.

“I was so impressed by this horse’s enthusiasm.

“Geez he tried so hard.”

Last year’s BTC Cup winner Famous Seamus went on to run in the two other Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival Group 1s, which could now also be on the agenda for Hot Snitzel.

First-up in a fortnight is the $750,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) followed by the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) back at Doomben on June 6, markets for which are set to be updated and reopened shortly at
