Chris Waller has uncovered a genuine Queensland Derby contender with his progressive three-year-old Sadler’s Lake running the ideal trial at Doomben on Cup Day to take out the 2015 Rough Habit Plate.
Since early in the season Sydney’s best horseman Waller has singled out High Chaparral gelding Sadler’s Lake as his big Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival hope heading towards the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) on June 6.
Having just his sixth career start this weekend, Sadler’s Lake handled a rise in class and distance and handled Waller with back-to-back wins on the card in the opening two with an all-the-way win in the $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m).
Waller left riding instructions up to Blake Shinn, and after Sadler’s Lake was positive out of the gates he took him right up to the front early to try and dictate the pace.
“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but after he began so positively he took the race by the scruff of the neck,” he said.
The move worked well, and showed there was nothing wrong with the Soft-rated Doomben track, as Sadler’s Lake ran along the inside nearly the whole way to win.
“It’s a very big thrill to win a race on this day,” Shinn, who rode Streama to victory in last year’s Doomben Cup for the late Guy Walter said.
“It brings back a lot of memories.
“It’s especially great to get one for the Ingham family and Chris.”
Tracking in a nice second throughout the leader and subsequent winner was the Peter Moody-trained Upham ($5.50), the Mastercraftsman gelding coming off a second in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.
He had to settle for second once again when he finished just over a length off Sadler’s Lake ($3.90) in the Rough Habit Plate, the trifecta rounded out by the Michael Nolan-trained favourite Jumbo Prince.
Winner of the Toowoomba Guineas last weekend, Outback Prince colt Jumbo Prince ($3.40) was on the seven day back-up and came from fourth last, forced to go around them all on the turn for home to be the widest runner down the final stretch to snare third.
Shinn was full of post-race praise for Sadler’s Lake who he said was progressing the right way to hand Waller with his second Queensland Derby win after the success of Hawkspur (2013) two years ago.
“He’s progressing for the Derby nicely,” he said.
“He did a bit of work early (today) but got a soft run and kicked strongly.
“It was fantastic.”
The next likely assignment for Sadler’s Lake, Upham, Jumbo Prince and the other Derby hopes is the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2000m) back at the track on Doomben 10,000 Day on May 23, a race that has produced more Queensland Derby winners than any other lead-up.
