2015 Doomben Cup Day Scratchings & Track Report

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival gets into full swing today, May 9, at Doomben Racecourse for Doomben Cup Day 2015 featuring a cracking nine-race program.

After the flooding and heavy rain of last Friday night that would have seen a washout in Brisbane, it is sunny skies and zero chance of precipitation at Doomben this afternoon making for a perfect day’s racing.

As of 7:30am (AEST) this morning the course proper at Doomben was rated a Soft (5), a possible upgrade on the cards as the track continues to dry out as the day proceeds.

Racing kicks off for the major Queensland meeting at 11:40am (AEST) and continues through until the last at 4:42pm (AEST).

There’s a double shot of Group 1 racing to enjoy as well as a host of exciting support acts.

The two big ones to get in on at the bookies run as Race 7 (3:27pm) and Race 8 (4:07pm) with the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) for the stayers and the $500,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m).

Race 1 (11:40am) – $100,000 Listed City Property Services Princess Stakes (2000m)

Cinnamon Carter comes out of the first leaving 11 three-year-old fillies facing off in the Queensland Oaks lead-up, the red hot favourite of which is Chris Waller’s Sydney raider Ballet Suite ($2.60).

Race 2 (12:17pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m)

An open field of three-year-olds in this Queensland Derby preparatory race that the markets on have two battling for top spot with the market mover Sadler’s Lake ($3.30) now ahead of last weekend’s Toowoomba Guineas winner Jumbo Prince ($3.50).

Race 3 (12:52pm) – $100,000 Listed Designline Graphics Juanmo Stakes (1200m)

#4 Calming Influence (9)

Waller has taking Calming Influence out in favour of a run in Sydney’s The 2015 Darley Crown today. That leaves 11 fillies and mares in the sprint with markets on the third led by Traveston Girl ($2.80) drawn a treat in gate three.

Race 4 (1:27pm) – $100,000 Listed James Boag’s Premium Members’ Handicap (1600m)

#7 Any Day Will Do (9), #8 Billy Aucash (11)

Two come out of this black type handicap leaving a dozen hopefuls to face off over the mile with Neo ($4) narrow favourite over Laser Hawk ($4.40) after his win in the Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.

Race 5 (2:07pm) – $175,000 Group 2 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m)

All 15 original final acceptors in the two-year-olds’ classic on the card remain a chance, many heading towards the Group 1 JJ Atkins on Stradbroke Day including the Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Sempre Libera ($4.20) who is on the drift.

Race 6 (2:47pm) – $125,000 Group 3 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m)

Thirteen in the mix for one of the traditional lead-ups to Queensland’s richest race – the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap back at this track and distance on June 6. Markets for today’s race have Charlie Boy (barrier two) as the firming $3.70 favourite and market mover.

Race 7 (3:27pm) – $650,000 Group 1 The Bundaberg Rum Doomben Cup (2000m)

The Group 1 racing gets underway with the full 15 still in the mix including last Saturday’s Toowoomba Cup winner Pornichet ($4.20) who leads the markets ahead of Leebaz ($5) who is firming fast after his Hollindale win two weeks back.

Race 8 (4:07pm) – $500,000 Group 1 UBET BTC Cup (1200m)

#2 Trust In A Gust (3), #12 Time For War (13)

Two notable withdrawals from the BTC Cup line-up with the Darren Weir-trained Trust In A Gust suffering a minor leg injury when being loaded onto his Brisbane-bound plane on Friday morning and Time For War suffering a wrenched joint. Fourteen remain with Our Boy Malachi ($2.60) the red hot favourite after winning 17 from 19 to date.

Race 9 (4:42pm) – $100,000 Listed IPG Connect Mick Dittman Plate (1200m)

#15 Shees Flawless (5)

Roger James-trained Kiwi Shees Flawless is out with 14 left in the three-year-olds’ sprint to close the card with money coming for the favourite Kuro ($3.30).
