The 2015 Rough Habit Plate is the opening Group race on the Doomben Cup Day card in Brisbane on Saturday, betting tips for the three-year-old’s staying clash found below.
Running as Doomben Race 2 at 12:17pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m) features a final field of 11 three-year-olds, many of which are heading towards a run in the Group 1 Queensland Derby next month.
New favourite in the latest Rough Habit Plate betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.90 after being smashed in from $4.50 is Sadler’s Lake drawn wide in gate 11 for top hoop Blake Shinn.
Chris Waller’s High Chaparral gelding has had two runs this time in, the latest of which was a second to Swift Lady in the wet at Randwick on April 25 over 1600m, form he can improve on with more ground and a firmer track this weekend.
Former top fancy now $3.30 second elect is then Jumbo Prince who has awesome lead-up form including his Toowoomba win last Saturday in the Guineas, and with winning form up to 1800m previously.
Also at single figures for punters looking for more value are the Peter Moody-trained stablemates Upham ($5) and Inauguration ($6) who ran second and ninth respectively behind Worthy Cause in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago in this race’s traditional lead-up.
So will the top two in betting fight it out to the line in the Rough Habit Plate or is there more value further down the markets for Saturday?
#6 Inauguration ($6)
Think former Queensland boy Moody has this race covered with the two stablemates. While the markets favour the other, Hugh Bowman’s mount Inauguration deserves to be forgiven for the second last when ninth in the Gunsynd Classic last time out. He was drawn out and the temp did him no favours. This time in he doesn’t have the hot pace on his inside, and so from gate five think he’ll be ready to strike third-up.
#7 Upham ($5)
The other Moody runner is in gate eight and in good form also with a Wyong win over the mile two back and the second in the Gunsynd when getting the better run. If runs like he did at the Gold Coast surely is a chance again with Kerrin McEvoy staying on.
#3 Sadler’s Lake ($2.90)
All the money is on Waller’s up-and-comer and he certainly has claims along with the rest of them. Ticks plenty of boxes and the form is there but needs to handle the extra metres and that awkward gate. Will be peaking fitness wise though and is a big danger on the firmer surface this weekend.
