There are 15 staying types making up the field for this year’s $650,000 Group 1 The Bundaberg Rum Doomben Cup (2000m), set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 3:27pm (AEST).

Leading the Doomben Cup betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.20, in from $4.50, is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet backing up on the seven day turnaround after a Toowoomba Cup win last weekend.

The Toowoomba Cup, which the Vespone four-year-old won with ease despite the big 60.5kg, was ‘Plan B’ after getting balloted out of the AD Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast the week before and now the talented French import gets the chance to prove his class once and for all.

He faces a number of other genuine hopes including the AD Hollindale Stakes winner from April 25, the Team Hawkes-trained Leebaz ($5) the second best in betting for the weekend after his second to Streama in last winter’s Doomben Cup.

The bookies are also taking no chances with Chris Waller’s nine-year-old Hollindale Stakes third placegetter I’m Imposing ($8) and four-time Group 1 winning New Zealand mare Silent Achiever ($8.50) who are both being kept safe at single figures.

So can Pornichet salute for the punters and hand Waterhouse with her first Doomben Cup win in nearly 20 years or is the value found outside the favourite?

#7 Leebaz ($5)

The Hawkes-trained son of Zabeel is bred for a race like this and came close when beaten into second by the classy mare 12 months ago. His form since then has been good including the Group 2 Hollindale win on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. Two weeks between runs is ideal and it was a solid effort there that suggested improvement. He faces some nice types obviously and isn’t drawn the best (11) but the money is coming for him and there are plenty of reasons why, including the fact the Hollindale has proved an excellent lead-up to this and he only needs to handle the 200m to win.

#8 I’m Imposing ($8)

He may be a rising 10-year-old but the form and will to run well was very obviously still there in the Hollindale when third. Waller has won this race twice in recent years and has five shooting for another this year, the veteran of the stablemates the best pick on paper. His fast finishing effort over 1800m two weeks ago looked good heading into a 2000m race where he came from near last for third and he’ll be right in the mix again this weekend with the right ride from Tye Angland if the horse shows up.

#10 Pornichet ($4.20)

Plenty of boxes ticked by the favourite so we can’t rule him out. Waterhouse is confident but she always is so would rather look at the form than any of Gai’s quotes. The form is good. Two wins from three starts. Had a hiccup when balloted out of the Hollindale but bounced back with the Toowoomba Cup win with a big weight last weekend. If that didn’t take too much out of him he’ll be flying WFA here from gate four with top hoop Blake Shinn aboard for the ride again.
