Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Phillip Stokes-trained Éclair Choice is narrow favourite to win back-to-back races in Saturday’s 2014 Euclase Stakes with Get The Nod hot on his heels in the latest markets for the Morphettville feature.
The major support race on the South Australian Derby Day line-up, this year’s $250,000 Group2 Euclse Stakes (1200m) is due to jump as Race 6 at 3:13pm (SA time) and features a final field of 13 three-year-olds.
Heading the field and markets at Ladbrokes.com.au as the current $4.60 favourite is the super-consistent California Dane gelding Éclair Choice, coming off a win in the listed Redelva Stakes (1100m) at Morpehttville Parks from April 18.
The galloper has finished out of the money just once in 11 starts boasting four wins, five seconds and a third – a record Stokes will be hoping he adds to this weekend at a track and distance the horse has finished runner-up in both his previous starts at.
Get The Nod (barrier eight) meanwhile is drawn beside the favourite (seven) and Joe Bowditch is down to ride the Lloyd Kennewell-trained U S Ranger gelding who is at $5 for the win.
Winner of Caulfield’s Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) in mid-August last year, the youngster failed to impress when 12th at Flemington in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) on September 13 before returning with a first-up sixth in the Redelva.
There are three other hopes at single figures to win the Eculase Stakes on Saturday including Husson Eagle ($6.50) in the outside barrier (13).
Patrick Payne’s Husson gelding may be drawn wide but with a smart last start win at Caulfield over 1000m, and Group 1 form when fifth to Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last November, the bookies are taking no chances.
The others under $10 are the Greg Eurell-trained Hard Spun gelding We’ve Got This ($7) coming off back-to-back seconds at Flemington last month and Lee & Anthony Freedman’s colt Nicoscene ($7.50) who won two on the trot at Moonee Valley before a third last time out over 1100m at Caulfield.
For value outside of the top half of the market the next best in betting include the returning 2014 Caulfield Guineas Prelude third placed colt Awesome Rock ($10) in gate two, Group 2 runner-up at Moonee Valley back in February Tudor ($13) and Pittsburgh Flyer ($14) out to improve on an eighth to Slightly Sweet at Randwick in the Group 3 James Carr Stakes.
