Two three-year-olds are battling for top spot in Saturday’s Rough Habit Plate 2015 odds at Doomben Racecourse, market mover Sadler’s Lake fast closing in on the early favourite Jumbo Prince for the Doomben Cup Day win.
There are 11 hopefuls making up the field for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m), the set weights showdown scheduled to run as Doomben Race 2 at 12:17pm (AEST).
Sitting at the top of the field and latest Rough Habit Plate betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Michael Nolan-trained Jumbo Prince, drawn wide in gate nine but paying $3.10 to overcome the gate.
Apprentice Luke Tarrant, who has a number of good rides on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival feature meeting’s card, sticks with the Outback prince colt who has won two of his past three starts.
The latest was only last Saturday at Toowoomba in the Guineas over 1625m, the short back up a non-issue according to the bookies.
The punters however are starting to come hard and fast for one of Jumbo Prince’s rivals, Sadler’s Lake backed in from $4.50 to $3.60.
Drawn the outside alley hasn’t deterred the money on Chris Waller’s promising High Chaparral gelding, Sadler’s Lake having run fourth to Federal in the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) on a wet Randwick track on April 11 before his latest run at the same course on the 25th when runner-up over 1600m.
Three other runners are also under $10 for the win including Upham ($5).
Kerrin McEvoy rides the in-form, Peter Moody-trained Mastercraftsman grey who comes off a second to Worthy Cause in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.
Rounding out the single figure hopes are then Moody’s other runner Inauguration ($6) to be ridden by Hugh Bowman from gate five and Gid Up Strop ($9) drawn the inside alley.
Authorized gelding Inauguration ran third two back on a Heavy (9) Randwick track behind Hi World in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and is out to atone for a disappointing ninth when beating home just one other runner in the Gunsynd in his Queensland debut.
Gid Up Strop meanwhile should get a gun run from barrier one with Damian Browne aboard the Pendragon gelding who represents top local trainer Robert Heathcote.
At longer odds but still under $10 are then Ryan’s second runner Brewery ($15) coming off a Gunsynd fifth following a second behind Gid Up Strop over 1630m at Doomben from April 11 and the Ben Ahrens-trained Chillin With Dylan ($17) who looks an excellent value place bet after crossing just over three lengths away third in the Gunsynd.
