Federal Leads Rescheduled 2015 Hawkesbury Guineas Field

Last Saturday’s Hawkesbury meet may have been a washout but two of the Group 3s on that race card will run this weekend at Rosehill Racecourse including the Hawkesbury Guineas 2015 where Federal is set to jump the favourite.

Godolphin’s smart Medaglia D’Oro gelding is one of 11 three-year-olds accepted in the rescheduled $150,000 Group 3 Blacktown Workers Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m), due to run as Rosehill Race 9 at 3:55pm (AEST) on Saturday.

Drawn in gate seven and carrying 57kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the race, the John O’Shea-trained Federal has won two of his past three starts this time in having improved on a Listed Gosford Guineas second two back to win the Listed South Pacific Classic over 1400m at Randwick in the wet on April 11.

Also coming off a win is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Eisenhower, the All American gelding suffering an early blow for Saturday coming up with the outside barrier 11 draw.

A winner of three of his four starts to date, Eisenhower comes off an April 23 win over 1100m at Canterbury but his sole defeat was at Rosehill where he returns this weekend.

Waterhouse has also accepted for Najoom, a talented young filly who is dually accepted on the card also still officially in the mix for the $150,000 Group 3 The 2015 Darley Crown (1300m) as the only three-year-old in the fillies-and-mares’ clash.

She won three on the trot earlier this autumn and was last seen finishing a brave second to Bonete in a Benchmark 75 over 1200m on a Heavy (8) Canterbury track late last month.

There are four other fillies taking on the boys in the Hawkesbury Guineas this weekend with the Lee Curtis-trained Press Report (barrier three), David Vandyke’s in-form Anyaas (barrier two), Tony McEvoy’s Martine (barrier six) and Ygritte (barrier nine) who has 55kg.

Commands filly Anyaas won over 1250m at Canterbury in February but was most impressive on April 18 at Randwick when she ran under a length away second to Slightly Sweet in the Group 3 James Carr Stakes (1400m) in her final lead-up to the Hawkesbury Guineas.

Martine remains a maiden after five starts but she boasts four seconds and a third and so is overdue for a win, her latest start being at Scone on April 17 when runner-up behind One More Tequila over 1300m.

Gerald Ryan prepares the widely-drawn Ygritte meanwhile, the Snitzel filly having beaten Federal home by a length to win the Gosford Guineas on April 2 before her third to the same galloper she faces off against on Saturday in the South Pacific Classic.

Drawn the rails in Saturday’s Guineas with Jason Collett booked for the ride is then Ryan’s other runner, All American colt Bachman second-up for the season on the back of a below par seventh to Dublin Lass at Randwick last month.
