2015 Doomben Cup Field: Pornichet Draws Four

Gai Waterhouse’s Doomben Cup 2015 favourite Pornichet has come up trumps in the barrier draw for Saturday’s major, the in-form French import to jump from gate four.

Highlighting a bumper nine-race program at Doomben Racecourse on the first major Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival meeting, this year’s $650,000 Group 1 The Bundaberg Rum Doomben Cup (2000m) is due to jump as Race 7 on Saturday at 3:27pm (AEST).

The weight-for-age feature has attracted 15 final acceptors, the favourite of which in the early markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Waterhouse’s Vespone four-year-old Pornichet.

After being balloted out of the AD Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago, Waterhouse ran the stallion last Saturday in the Toowoomba Cup where he carried a hefty 60.5kg to victory.

He is now on the short seven day turnaround, but Waterhouse remains confident he is the one to beat especially with jockey Blake Shinn getting every chance from the nice alley.

“It was a huge effort to carry the big weight in the Toowoomba Cup and he probably needed that run after having a long gap in between races,” Waterhouse’s stable rep Ed O’Rourke told The Courier-Mail this week.

Waterhouse hasn’t won a Doomben Cup in nearly 20 years, but in an omen for the drought to be broken, her 1996 winner Juggler won from barrier four.

The barrier last produced a Doomben Cup winner more recently than that however with Sarrera saluting from gate four in 2008.

The other early favourite to win Saturday’s Doomben Cup is the Team Hawkes-trained Leebaz who didn’t fare as well with the barriers, the AD Hollindale Stakes winner drawn double-digits with gate 11.

The Zabeel gelding was runner-up in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) two back before winning the traditional Doomben Cup lead-up, the Group 2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on April 25.

The Hollindale produced last year’s Doomben Cup champ Streama (2014) who completed the same double Leebaz, runner-up in the Doomben Cup behind Guy Walter’s mare 12 months ago, is out to repeat this winter.

Leebaz however is out to become the first winner in the Group 1 to do it from a double digit barrier since Scenic Shot (13 in 2009).

Barrier 11 meanwhile hasn’t produced a winner since Mr. Bureaucrat (2002).

Also drawn wide with work to do from less-than-ideal barriers are the likes of Michael Kent’s last start Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap winning mare at the Gold Coast Epingle (12), Rob Heathcote’s Toowoomba Cup third placed four-year-old Hopfgarten (13) and 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (14).

Dominating the Doomben Cup field numbers-wise meanwhile is Sydney’s number one trainer Chris Waller who has previously won the race with Beaten Up (2012) and Metal Bender (2010).

This year Waller’s hopes of a third Doomben Cup trophy are: Foreteller, Moriarty, Hawkspur, Weary and I’m Imposing.

Of those the two most likely look to be veteran nine-year-old I’m Imposing in barrier six for jockey Tye Angland and Dansili eight-year-old Foreteller – gate nine / James McDonald – who ran third and fourth respectively behind Leebaz in the Hollindale Stakes last time out.

Other notable Doomben Cup hopes include the Scott Brunton-trained Mornington Cup winner Banca Mo and Roger James’s four-time Group 1 winning Kiwi mare Silent Achiever.
