2015 Darley BRC Sprint Field Released

Set to run as Doomben Race 6 at 2:47pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m) features a final field of 13 sprinters with the Colin Scott-trained Speediness to wear the number one saddlecloth.

Drawn wide in gate 10 for in-form Sydney jockey James McDonald, Testa Rossa seven-year-old Speediness carries the 59kg top weight in the BRC Sprint and races second-up on Saturday.

His resuming run on April 25 at the Gold Coast was a below par eighth behind one of Saturday’s BTC Cup favourites Srikandi in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), form the Toorak Handicap runner-up will look to improve on this Saturday even with the big weight and wide gate.

Also in double digits for the BRC Sprint this winter are the likes of the Barry Lockwood-trained Hinkler Classic fourth placed Tokamak (11) and Joe Pride’s Rock Sturdy (13) who Hugh Bowman is booked to ride.

Fastnet Rock four-year-old Rock Sturdy has won four of his 12 starts to date, the latest of which was his one and a half-length victory in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill last September.

The stallion had a notable break after that turf triumph and didn’t race again until his first-up eighth last time out behind BTC Cup favourite Our Boy Malachi in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) in Sydney on April 18.

He should improve off that this weekend however for his Doomben debut at a distance he’s got a solid record of two wins and a second from four previous runs over.

Drawn better for the BRC Sprint clash meanwhile are the likes of Rob Heatchote’s four-time winner at the track and distance Joba on the rails, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Charlie Boy in gate two who comes off a Hall Mark Stakes fifth first-up and Estonian Princess (barrier four) for Sydney’s Gerald Ryan.

Four-year-old Snitzel mare Estonian Princess has solid Group 1 form from the spring in Melbourne and was last seen running just a length away second to I’ve Got The Looks in the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) on Hollindale Stakes Day at the Gold Coast.

She is yet to win second-up but does have a nice record over Saturday’s distance (7-2-2-0) and will benefit from the nice draw after doing it tough from barrier 14 of 16 in the Silk Stocking.

Other notable BRC Sprint hopes on the weekend include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Jet Spur four-year-old Gundy Spirit.

Brisbane’s Tony Gollan prepares livewire chance Gundy Spirit who won over the track and distance, his third success over the 1350m at Doomben from six runs, two back before a brave third to Neo in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) the Gold Coast on Anzac Day a fortnight back.
