Waller Fillies Top 2015 Rough Habit Plate Nominations

Chris Waller’s two early picks to win the Queensland Oaks this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Winx and Ballet Suite are both early nominees for the Rough Habit Plate 2015 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday.

Nominations for this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Mitty’s Rough Habit Plate (2000m) have been extended until 9am (AEST) on Tuesday with 14 original entries taken by Racing Queensland today.

Of those there are just two fillies nominated to take on the boys in the three-year-olds’ set weights clash, Waller’s stablemates Ballet Suite and Winx both also nominated for the $100,000 Listed Princess Stakes (2000m) against their own sex at the meeting.

Street Cry filly Winx and High Chaparral filly Ballet Suite are currently sitting first and second respectively in the pre-field odds for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) on May 30.

Winner of the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) back in mid-March, Winx was last seen running second in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on April 11, a race Ballet Suite failed to fire in on the rain-affected track when crossing a distant eighth.

Sydney’s premier trainer, Waller also has two others nominated for the Rough Habit on the weekend with Quick Strike and Sadler’s Lake, both sons of High Chaparral, his male entries.

Quick Strike was last seen running fifth just two lengths off the Kiwi-trained winner Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) on April 6, while Sadler’s Lake comes off a second over the Randwick mile in a Benchmark 70 on April 25.

The highest-rated Rough Habit nomination is the Michael Nolan-trained Toowoomba galloper Jumbo Prince, the galloper coming off a win in his home town Guineas last Saturday.

The Outback Prince colt won the Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) by three-quarters of a length and will back-up just seven days later in the Rough Habit on way to the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) on June 6.

Also coming via the Toowoomba Guineas last weekend is the Liam Birchley-trained fourth-past-the-post Reckless Abandon.

Birchely has also nominated for his last start Sunshine Coast winner Desert General.

Another galloper coming off a nice last start run is the Ben Aherns-trained Beaudesert-based colt Chillin With Dylan who ran a brave third behind 2015 Queensland Derby favourite Worthy Cause in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) on the Gold Coast last month.

Gunsynd Classic runner-up Upham is also in the mix this weekend, Peter Moody’s Mastercraftsman gelding beaten two lengths by the runaway winner in his first Group 3 assignment.

Moody’s other Rough Habit entry is Carbine Club Stakes third placed Inauguration, the Authorized gelding out to atone for his second last when ninth in the Gunsynd last time out.

See below for the full Rough Habit Plate 2015 nominations, late entries open until tomorrow morning before the final field and barriers are released on Wednesday.
