Mick Cerchi’s veteran galloper Tanby is out to improve on a failed last start run in the Pakenham Cup having been nominated for Thursday’s Warrnambool Cup 2015.
The Galileo eight-year-old, winner of the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) on March 9 is one of 24 nominations for this week’s $200,000 Listed Sungold Milk Warrnambool Cup (2350m).
Tanby backed up from his narrow Adelaide Cup victory at Morphettville over the two miles, dropped right back in distance for a shot at the Pakenham Cup (2000m) on April 26.
He failed to fire however and ran a disappointing 16th of 16 runners, unable to handle the rise from 53kg to 59.5kg when beaten over nine lengths by the winner Tooleybuc Kid.
The Flemington-based Cerchi however could give the galloper another shot with Tanby allocated 60kg as the top-rated and weighted Warrnambool Cup hope for Thursday in country Victoria.
Following Tanby in the Warrnambool Cup weights this year are then Shoreham and the Pakenham Cup winner Tooleybuc Kid both on 59.5kg.
Saab Hasan’s Reset five-year-old Shoreham ran third to Sertorius three back in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield, which is the race that produced last year’s Warrnambool Cup winner – Akzar running second in the Easter Cup before the Warrnambool triumph.
Since the Easter Cup, Shoreham has had two other runs when fourth to Tooleybuc Kid over 2000m at Caulfield on April 18 and then second to Martinvast at Flemington over the 2600m on Anzac Day.
Trainer Darren Weir prepared last year’s Warrnambool Cup winner Akzar, and returns with a livewire chance in 2015 – Tooleybuc Kid.
The Denon gelding has bene in flying form all autumn, including his third in the Yarra Valley Cup (1950m) back in mid-March.
From there he ran second at Mornington with 59kg on his back, and then won back-to-back races beating Star Fashion in a handicap over 2000m and then Kareeming in the Pakenham Cup last time out with 57kg from barrier 15 (of 16).
Weir has also nominated for eight-year-olds Shamardashing (56.gk) and Count Encosta (54kg) as he chases back-to-back Warrnambool Cup victories, as well as genuine livewire hope Tall Ship.
In-form Sea The Stars four-year-old Tall Ship has won his past three starts including the Stawell Cup (2000m) on April 5 and the Terang Cup (2150m) last time out with 57.5kg and Brad Rawiller aboard on April 19.
He drops half a kilo for Thursday’s run and will again face Terang Cup runner-up Tuscan Fire from the Dan O’Sullivan stables who will be lining up for the 68th time if accepted.
Coming off a third to Tooleybuc Kid in the Pakenham Cup meanwhile is the David & Coral Feek-trained Verglas mare Lucciola, the six-year-old beaten just over half a length on the back of a Stoney Creek Cup (2100m) win on March 8.
Other notable mares in the mix include the Team Hawkes-trained La Amistad who ran third to Signoff in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington last spring and Mitchell Freedman’s local Warrnambool-trained Street Boss four-year-old Belvedere Road.
The chestnut mare has won her past three on the trot with wins at Werribee, Sandown-Lakeside and Pakenham over the past month.
Her latest was with 56kg and Ben Melham aboard on Pakenham Cup Day over 2500m in a Benchmark 70, an effort she’ll be out to repeat at home when she drops back to the 54kg minimum.
Other notable Warrnambool Cup nominees this year include Michael O’leary’s last start Penola Millicent Cup winner Evenmoreaction and the Michael Kent-trained You Think So after his first win since January over 2500m at Flemington.
