Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Talented two-year-old Dead Or Alive has broken through for a maiden race win in the best way possible at Morphettville Racecourse this afternoon; displaying an exceptional turn of foot late in the final straight to take out the Listed Oaklands Plate (1600m) with relative ease.
Jumping from the gates only fairly, champion jockey Damien Oliver was forced to settle the Wanted gelding off the pace of early leaders Battle Brewing and rank outsider Myora, who set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.
Finding a good rhythm as receiving a comfortable run in transit as Battle Brewing and Myora opened a gap of just of two lengths at the fore of the field, Oliver slowly began to wind Dead Or Alive up and pushed wide rounding onto the final straight.
Offered a clear racing line but charged with plenty to do, the two-year-old spooled up and charged forward, making up a lot of ground late and hitting the lead with less-than 100m to travel; finishing a length ahead of Battle Brewing and a brave Commiserate in third.
Dead Or Alive was rated a $5.50 third favourite to win the 2015 Oaklands Plate but was able to make the most of the ideal barrier 2 and keen turn of foot, despite the somewhat sluggish start.
Having contested just one competitive start prior to this afternoon’s race, Dead Or Alive was unable to make anything of an impact when 13th in the Vobis Gold Ingot (1200m) at Caulfield on April 18th but clearly relished an arguable step back in class and jump up to a mile in the 2015 Oaklands Plate.
Second placegetter Battle Brewing has now posted three minor place finishes through a total of five career starts, which also included a commendable third behind Last Bullet and The Grey Flash in the Group 3 Campolina Stud Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) on March 28th.
The Mick Price-trained Commiserate continued a good build in form in finish third in the 2015 Oaklands Plate, having previous finished a forgetting 13th in a Pakenham minor over 1200m and fourth in the Royal Hotel Handicap (1400m) at Seymour on April 15th.
