The Robert Sangster Stakes 2015 headlines the autumn Group 1 racing action at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse on the weekend, and below are the insider Races.com.au tips on the females’ only classic.
Set to run as Race 7 at 3:58pm (SA time), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) originally drew a final field of 17 fillies and mares.
Platelet was drawn the inside alley meaning the 16 remaining runners all come in one gate and barrier one now belongs to the John Salanitri-trained I Love It ($21) who comes off a second in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap from the start of March at Randwick.
Race favourite in the latest Robert Sangster Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the firming market mover Miracles Of Life smashed in from $5.50 to $4.60, the now Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Group 1 winner having kicked off her career in SA.
Also at single figures are the John Sadler-trained Group 1 runner-up Vain Queen ($5), Sapphire Stakes winner last time out Avoid Lightning ($7) and Politeness ($8.50) who opened as long as $12 despite a last start win in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
So will one of those under $10 in the markets get the job done or is there an upset Robert Sangster Stakes result on the cards from the likes of Symon Wilde’s recent Group 3 double winner at Caulfield Tycoon Tara ($11) or Perth Group 1 sprint star Magnifisio ($12)?
#1 Miracles Of Life ($4.60)
She opened second pick to win and the punters have quickly snapped up that price to make Team Snowden’s Not A Single Doubt four-year-old the favourite. While the top fancies have a poor recent record in the Robert Sangster, superstar Black Caviar (2012) the last to salute, we are happy to follow the money trail this year. This mare is back where she began (with Daniel Clarken) under who she won Melbourne’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes as a juvenile. She’s been rejuvenated since joining the Snowdens and is racing near her two-year-old form again, proven with a Group 2 Challenge Stakes win two back and her Group 1 The Galaxy third. Loves Morphettville (5-2-2-0) and will enjoy coming back here
#6 Gregers ($11)
Hayes & Dabernig have two chances but Gregers is the genuine hope. The now four-year-old daughter of Commands ran third in this 12 months ago, and was unlucky not to win, before a fourth in The Goodwood. The track and distance hold no fears then, and her lead-up in Melbourne is promising including the third in the Bel Esprit Stakes behind Politeness that she’ll be improving on here. Gate eight suits, Craig Williams rides and she ticks plenty of boxes in an open race.
#5 Vain Queen ($5)
Vain Queen opened the punters’ pick but has drifted out with money coming for others, but she could still get the job done. She’s been racing in top company this autumn with a first-up third in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) in February then the second to Lucky Hussler in last month’s William Reid. She could have won both of those with a bit of luck, and she’s suffered the blow with barrier 13 again here. That said, a double digit gate has proved advantageous in this race in recent years so she’s too good to ignore even from the barrier.
