The Australasian Schweppes Oaks 2015 runs at Morphettville Racecourse this weekend on the first major day of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, and below are the exclusive Races.com.au tips on the fillies’ only feature.
Due to run as Robert Sangster Stakes Day Race 5 at 2:38pm (SA time), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) features a capacity field of three-year-old females led by the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontein Ruby.
Drawn a treat in gate two with Mark Zahra riding, the Melbourne raider pays $3.60 for the win through Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering a Bonus Bet offer if your Schweppes Oaks selection runs 2nd or 3rd, and shoots for her third on the trot.
She’s won back-to-to back black types in Melbourne and she should settle up on the speed from the nice draw this weekend, presenting a big danger over the closing stages.
The other major players in the Schweppes Oaks field and betting markets are then Vinery Stud Stakes winner over the same distance Fenway ($4.60), Perth flyer Delicacy ($8) who drops back from the mile and a half in her eastern state debut and the Chris Waller-trained Wine Tales ($9) ridden by Hugh Bowman.
With so many livewire chances at single-figures plus a host of longer priced fillies out for an upset including the last start Group 3 Auraria Stakes winning local Fitocracy at a stupid $21, below we’ve got our Schweppes Oaks tips to help you sort who to back and who to sack in the classic!
#4 Wine Tales ($9)
She’s teetering on double figures and that’s a good price for Chris Waller’s smart Tale Of The Cat filly Wine Tales who is going to relish a firmer Adelaide track. She’s really no good in the wet, but was brave in defeat on a Soft (6) in Sydney when runner-up to nice type Hi World in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) last start. That followed a sixth in the Adrian Knox where again it was a rain-affected course that got the better of her. The distance is a non-issue and with better ground under her feet, from barrier eight with Hugh Bowman in the saddle she’s going to be hard to hold off.
#5 Jurasound ($21)
There are so many fillies around this price who could surprise, but our pick of the pack based on some outstanding lead-up form is the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Von Costa De Hero filly Jurasound. She’s got a super consistent record (10-4-3-2) and comes off a second to the favourite Fontein Ruby in the VOBIS Gold Reef (1600m) at Caulfield. If Fontein Ruby is at $3.60, this filly at $21 should be shorter. The distance will be the test, but she’s got the inside alley, which has produced five previous Oaks winners. Hayes has saddled up 27 previous runners in this race for three wins, and while we don’t think she can win, this filly has what it takes to be in the finish.
#1 Fenway ($4.60)
While both Fontein Ruby and the Perth star Delicacy have claims, Fenway’s win in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes over the 2000m in Melbourne has her hard to look past for a place for us. She’s had a freshen-up since that impressive effort and in gate six with Blake Shinn aboard she is more than capable of throwing down a good challenge.
