Srikandi Features in 2015 Stradbroke Handicap Nominations

Ciaron Maher’s impressive Victory Stakes winning mare Srikandi is one of the headline entries among the bumper 111 nominations taken for the Stradbroke Handicap 2015 this week by Racing Queensland.

Group 1 nominations for all the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival features are now out including those for Queensland’s richest race, the $2 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) running over 50m shorter at Doomben Racecourse this year on June 6.

The last mare to beat home the boys in the Stradbroke was the Peter Moody-trained Mid Summer Sun who scored an upset as a 30/1 roughie back in 2012, but this year a female sprint star is set to start near the top of the markets at with Srikandi looking an early favourite.

The Dubawi four-year-old put the writing on the wall in Brisbane last year winning three Queensland races including the Listed Junamo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben before her third behind River Lad in the Straddie at Eagle Farm.

She returned off a spell at the Gold Coast only last Saturday and showed she had lost none of her shine with a soft win over Ball Of Muscle and Dances On Stars in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

Her name is now firmly entrenched in the Group 1 Brisbane race nominations with the class mare holding entries for both the BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000 as well as the Stradbroke.

Other good quality mares in the Stradbroke mix this winter include this weekend’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes favourite in Adelaide Vain Queen, the in-form Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness and the Chris Waller-trained Catkins.

Waller has six Stradbroke Handicap nominees as Sydney’s premier trainer chases his first win in the race this year, Catkins one of his best hopes of breaking his duck.

Connections have suffered through a host of close calls at elite level with the talented grey daughter of Dubawi, five-year-old Catkins last seen missing out again on April 11 at Randwick when runner-up to Amanpour in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Waller has also nominated for Boban, last start Arrowfield 3YO Sprint winner Delectation, German import Flamingo Star, Strawberry Boy and You’ll Never.

Also with six Stradbroke Handicap entries this winter is local Brisbane horseman Tony Gollan who came close to success last year with his 2014 Victory Stakes winner Temple Of Boom crossing third past the post to River Lad, who is also nominated for the $2 million classic this year.

A rising nine-year-old, Temple Of Boom is nominated for all the sprint majors again this carnival but will need to be improving off his sixth in the Victory Stakes when failing to defend his title on April 25.

Gollan’s other Stradbroke hopes this year are Alma’s Fury, Gundy Spirit, Whiskey Allround, and three-year-old fillies Hijack Hussy and Traveston Girl.

Traveston Girl is one of the most exciting young Stradbroke hopes this season after the daughter of Flying Spur ran third in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) last weekend in her first run since a Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) second over the mile in Melbourne last spring.

Ace colt Sincero (2011) was the last three-year-old Stradbroke Handicap winner and other three-year-old hopes this year include Peter Moodys Group 1 placegetter Bring Me The Maid, the aforementioned Waller-trained Delectation, Robert Smerdon’s Group 2 winner Lumosty last seen running sixth in the Crown Oaks at Flemington and Nostradamus.

Prepared by Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes, Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus was last seen winning the Gold Coast Guineas.

Team Hawkes’ other headline Stradbroke Handicap-bound sprinter is Our Boy Malachi, a winner of 17 of his 19 career starts to date after the Top Echelon six-year-old enjoyed an all-too-easy win in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 18.

Also well-placed in that run and nominated for the Stradbroke in Brisbane are runner-up Craftiness, third placegetter Hidden Warrior and the fourth-placed Fast ‘N’ Rocking.

The traditional final lead-up for horses heading into the Stradbroke Handicap is the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m), and all 55 nominees for this year’s 10,000 feature in the Stradbroke entries as well.

2015 Stradbroke Handicap weights are due out on Tuesday June 2 followed by the final acceptances closing on Wednesday June 3 at 9:00am (AEST).
