The highest-rated acceptor for Saturday’s Queen Of The South 2015 field in Adelaide, the Robbie Griffiths-trained Girl In Flight has suffered an early blow with the outside barrier for the Morphettville feature.
One of eight races running at Morphettville Racecourse for Robert Sangster Stakes Day this weekend, the $175,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) has attracted a final field of 13 fillies and mares.
The 96-rated Girl In Flight is one of the headliners, but jockey Matthew Allen has his work cut out for him as the Commands four-year-old is drawn the car park in barrier 13.
Girl In Flight is looking to break a year-long drought not having won a race since the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville last Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
She backed up from that to run a disappointing 13th to May’s Dream in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) as a three-year-old, and her form since has been solid back home in Melbourne.
Two back she was runner-up to the highly-spruiked Noble Protector in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, but is out to atone for a last start fifth behind Silverball in the Ross Stevenson Trophy (1600m) at Flemington on April 11.
Also high up the ratings in Saturday’s set weights plus penalties clash are the likes of the Nigel Blackiston-trained Flemington visitor Let’s Make Adeal (9) racing first-up and Leon & Troy Corsten’s in-form Marianne.
Drawn well mid-field in barrier six for top hoop Hugh Bowman, fellow Victorian raider Marianne comes off a string of good black-type placings back home.
The Darci Brahma four-year-old ran third two back in the Sunline Stakes and was far from disgraced on April 18 at Caulfield when beaten only a length running third to Amorino in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m).
Also coming off nice last start efforts are the likes of the Neville Parnham-trained WA raider Bippo No Bungus who was fourth in the Anniversary Vase, Darren Weir’s Elusive City six-year-old Atlantis Dream and stablemate Ava’s Delight.
The local hopes include Phillip Stokes’ rails-drawn Fastnet Rock four-year-old Held Hostage and the Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Cavaloce.
Clare Lindop has the ride on the consistent Cavaloce, the Testa Rossa four-year-old coming off a second at the track and distance in easier company ahead of this step up in grade.
Other notable Queen Of The South Stakes chances include last start Ballarat winner Clear Direction who has won four of her five previous 1600m runs and the John Saddler-trained Japhils who comes off a win in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1400m) at the track.
