A six-year-old son of Hussonet, Karacatis leads a 12-horse field for this year’s $115,000 Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m), the handicap sprint due to run as Race 8 at 4:35pm (SA time) on Robert Sangster Stakes Day this weekend.

Paul Gatt rides the top weight from a gun barrier four draw, Karacatis second-up for the season after returning with a fifth in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on April 18.

He chases his first win since a black-type victory at the same track and distance last September, and boasts an outstanding 1100m record at Morphettville with four wins and three thirds from nine previous attempts.

The second heaviest weighted DC McKay Stakes hopeful this autumn is then the in-form Daytona Grey for Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas.

Clare Lindop rides the Artie Schiller five-year-old from a wide barrier 10 draw on 58.5kg, which is the same weight the grey galloper carried to victory in the RN Irwin Stakes.

He had plenty to spare on the line in the Group 3 last time out winning by nearly two and a half lengths, but did it from gate two (of seven) and will need to on fire again to overcome the double-digit barrier and top field here.

Macdonald & Gluyas have also accepted for Nearest To Pin (57kg) who Nicholas Hall rides from barrier seven first-up, the Golden Lake gelding who has form in good company in Melbourne racing for the first time since Boxing Day.

Also carrying 57kg is the Byron Cozamanis-trained Vatican, a Steven Arnold mount in barrier five looking to atone for a failed 13th behind Politeness in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) over this distance at Caulfield last time out.

Along with Daytona Grey, the other two last start winners in the DC McKay Stakes field this year are the flying David Jolly-trained Streetcar Isabelle (barrier six) and the rails-drawn Yesterday’s Songs for Melbourne’s Michael Moroney.

Danerich mare Streetcar Isabelle looks to extend her winning streak this time in to three on the trot after wins at Gawler in February and the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) giving her an undefeated record over the distance of Saturday’s showdown.

The Goolwa-based Jolly is also represented by Statue Of Liberty mare Spirits Dance in barrier two, with a jockey still to be announced.

Yesterday’s Song meanwhile has Damien Oliver riding from barrier one looking for back-to-back 1100m wins after success at Geelong on April 8.

The Henrythenavigator four-year-old carted a hefty 60.5kg to victory from barrier 12 of 12 that day, and is sure to appreciate the inside alley and the drop right back to the 55kg minimum on the weekend.

Other notable DC McKay Stakes hopefuls include the Peter Moody-trained Bel Esprit Stakes runner-up Thermal Current out wide in 11, the Team Hawkes-trained veteran Agent and Minaj in the outside alley.
