Miracles Of Life Leads 2015 Robert Sangster Stakes Field

Peter & Paul Snowden’s former Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles Of Life will wear the number one saddlecloth when she returns to her original home at Morphettville for a shot at the Robert Sangster Stakes 2015 in Adelaide.

One of two Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival Group 1s running in South Australia on Saturday, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) features a final field of 17 fillies and mares.

Returning to Morphettville is the now Snowden-trained Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Miracles Of Life who kicked off her career in South Australia under the guidance of Daniel Clarken, with whom she won her opening four career starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne as a two-year-old.

She has won three subsequent Group 2s since then, most recently the Challenge Stakes over the 1000m at Randwick on March 7 for Team Snowden.

Miracles Of Life was last seen running a brave third to Sweet Idea in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill a fortnight later, and on Saturday Hugh Bowman retains the ride with the duo drawn a treat in gate seven.

Miracles Of Life is the right age for a Robert Sangster win with three of the past four winners being four-year-olds, but barrier seven hasn’t produced a winner since Spirit Of Love (1998).

Leading the early Robert Sangster Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au over the week has been John Sadler’s Vain Queen who has suffered an early blow drawing wide with gate 13 for her and jockey Nicholas Hall.

A winner of seven of her 14 starts to date, Artie Schiller five-year-old Vain Queen comes off a brave second to Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 27 where Hall also rode her.

A double digit barrier is better than it seems however with the past two Robert Sangster Stakes winners having jumped from wide gates with Driefontein (2014) in 10 and Platelet (2013) from 11.

The Darren Weir-trained Platelet, who also ran second in the Robert Sangster 12 months ago, is back for a third shot at the weight-for-age classic in 2015 this year coming up trumps with the inside alley.

Jockey Brad Rawiller shoots for his first win in the race riding Weir’s six-year-old daughter of Strategic who is out to improve on her sixth in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at the track on April 18.

Incredibly, no six-year-old has won the race in over 30 years giving Platelet an age hoodoo to overcome on Saturday.

There are three last start winners in the Robert Sangster line-up this year including the Les Bridge-trained Avoid Lightning, another six-year-old after an upset.

She won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last start, but will need to be at her best after drawing a horror barrier out in 16.

Also after successive wins are then the Robert Smerdon-trained Listed Bel Esprit Stakes winner in Melbourne Politeness out in gate 14 for former South Australian hoop Dwayne Dunn and the in-form Fine Approach shooting for her third Morphettville win on the trot.

There are also two three-year-old fillies taking on the older mares in the race this autumn, the last three-year-old to win being Rostova (2010).

This year the youngsters are Lee & Shannon Hope’s Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes winning daughter of Street Cry Sabatini (barrier 10) and the ultra-consistent Group 2 Kewney Stakes winner Wawail (barrier six) for Lindsay Park.

Along with Wawail David Hayes & Tom Dabernig have also accepted for Commands four-year-old Gregers in barrier eight for Craig Williams and building to a win after a first-up second and second-up third to Politeness in the Bel Esprit Stakes.

Some of the better drawn chances then include Jim Taylor’s Group 1 winning WA raider Magnifisio to be ridden by Jason Brown from barrier four on the back of an RN Irwin Stakes fourth in her Adelaide debut, the Peter Moody-trained Runway Star in gate three for Damien Oliver and I Love It in barrier two.
