Following her inside barrier two draw for this weekend’s Adelaide feature the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontein Ruby has retained her spot at the top of the 2015 Australasian Oaks odds.
Running as the fifth on Morphettville’s Robert Sangster Stakes Day program with a jump time of 2:38pm (local), this autumn’s $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) features a capacity final field.
Of the acceptors it is Smerdon’s in-form daughter of Turffontein Fontein Ruby who is the dominant $3.40 favourite, jockey Mark Zahra getting plenty of options from gate two, which surprisingly hasn’t produced an Australasian Oaks winner in the past 30 years.
Two back Fontein Ruby, who makes her Adelaide debut on the weekend, won the Listed Alexandra Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley and she made it back-to-back miles victories at Caulfield on April 18 with a nice one and three-quarter length effort in the VOBIS Gold Reef.
Just three of her rivals are also under $10 in the update Australasian Oaks odds for a win this weekend, including $4.80 second elect Fenway.
Fenway has drawn to perfection in barrier six for her hoop Blake Shinn, the gate last producing a winner in 2011 with Lights Of Heaven for Melbourne’s Peter Moody.
A winner of two of her six starts to date, the nicely-bred High Chaparral filly Fenway is already an elite level champ in Sydney after Shinn rode her to a narrow victory in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes over the 2000m at Rosehill on March 28.
The other two single figure hopes are then Perth visitor Delicacy ($6) shooting for her fifth straight win but first outside of WA and Wine Tales ($9) for Sydney’s Chris Waller.
William Pike is over for the ride on Al Maher filly Delicacy, winner of the Group 3 WA Oaks – Group 2 WATC Derby double over 2400m in her two most recent runs at Ascot this autumn.
Jumping from gate eight with Hugh Bowman riding, Wine Tales comes off a second against the boys in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick on April 18.
As for the longer priced fillies out for an upset Australasian Oaks result, the best fancied are the Nigel Blackiston-trained Cathy’s Mark ($11) from Melbourne who comes off a fourth in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) at the track and the rails-drawn Jurasound ($17) who ran second to Fontein Ruby at Caulfield last time out, before the rest of the chances can be found at $21 or longer.
