James McDonald will be hoping for a quick return...
A diminutive number of Oaklands Plate 2015 nominations were taken by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) on Monday with nine two-year-olds entered for the Robert Sangster Stakes Day showdown.
It was only single-figure entries for this year’s $80,000 Listed Oaklands Plate (1600m), the mile clash running under set weights plus penalties conditions for juveniles at Morphettville Racecourse on Saturday.
The highest-rated of the original entries is Leon & Troy Corstens’ Savabeel filly Zarabeel who is looking to break her maiden status at start number three if accepted.
Her debut was over 1200m at Flemington on April 11 where she ran a brave third behind nice types Black Vanquish (1st) and My Poppette (2nd).
She returned to Victoria’s premier track on Anzac Day last Saturday and stepped up to black type company for the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) where she was far from disgraced running just over two lengths away sixth to My Poppette.
Now she’s set to head to South Australia for another Listed run, this time stepping up to a mile for the Oaklands Plate where her staying pedigree will come into play.
Finishing one further back than Zarabeel in the Anzac Day Stakes, and now Adelaide-bound, is the Peter Moody-trained I Am Invincible colt Invincible Knight who ran seventh.
He was still only two and a half lengths off the winner and could also be on the short turnaround into the Oaklands Plate for his third career start and first outside of Melbourne.
There’s a host of top local Oaklands Plate chances this autumn though out to stop the raiders from stealing the show including the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Battle Brewing.
The four-time starter is yet to taste success but caught the eye two back when the Medaglia D’Oro colt ran a close third only a quarter-length off the winner Last Bullet in the Group 3 Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on March 28.
His next run was over the mile at Murray Bank when runner-up to Ilovewhatshebrings with one of SA’s best Clare Lindop in the saddle.
Other notable local chances include the Jon O’Connor-trained Manchester coming off a sixth to The Grey Flash in the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 11, and the Phillip Stokes-trained duo of Myora and Patriot Act.
Also with dual entries is Caulfield’s Mick Price who has entered Congrats filly Commiserate as well as Wanted gelding Dead Or Alive out to improve on his 13th to Fleur Fatale on debut in the VOBIS Gold Ingot (1200m) at home on April 18.
Rounding out the Oaklands Plate 2015 entries this year is then the Robert Smerdon-trained Maxie’s Blue Girl, the Fastnet Rock filly from Melbourne coming off a third at Seymour over 1400m.
