A host of Group 1 The Goodwood hopes are nominated to face off in Morphettville’s DC McKay Stakes 2015 this weekend in Adelaide including RN Irwin Stakes winner Daytona Grey.
Nominations for this year’s $115,000 Group 3 Seven News DC McKay Stakes (1100m) have been extended until 10:00am (local time) on Tuesday, with 16 current entries for the quality handicap clash.
The race is a traditional lead-up into the prestigious $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) back at the track over an extra 100m, this year’s Goodwood Handicap running on May 16.
The last The Goodwood winner to have their final lead-up in the DC McKay Stakes however was Super Elegant (2004) nearly 10 years ago.
Last year’s DC McKay Stakes winner was Essay Raider who graduated from a fourth to subsequent Robert Sangster Stakes winner Driefontein in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.
This year it was the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Artie Schiller gelding Daytona Grey who took out the RN Irwin Stakes on April 18, the five-year-old now looking to hand his trainers with back-to-back DC McKay Stakes wins.
Macdonald & Gluyas have also nominated for last July’s Bletchingly Stakes third placed Nearest To Pin this weekend.
The only other RN Irwin Stakes runners nominated to back up in the DC McKay on the weekend are the Richard Jolly-trained Hussonet six-year-old Karacatis (5th) and last-past-the-post Scarlet Billows (7th) who walked home over 75 lengths from 41-1 roughie Daytona Grey.
A host of interstate visitors are also in the DC McKay Stakes mix this autumn including the Team Hawkes-trained seven-year-old Agent, Commands mare Minaj and Peter Moody’s recent Matrice Stakes winner at the track Runway Star who has also been nominated for the $500,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at the meeting.
Moody has also nominated for his Exceed And Excel four-year-old Thermal Current coming off a second to Politeness in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) from April 18 back in Melbourne.
Other notable DC McKay Stakes nominations include last start Oakbank Stakes winner Streetcar Isabelle who is undefeated over the distance, last start Caulfield winner Sunday Escape and Michael Moroney’s Yesterday’s Songs coming off a 1100m Geelong win a month back.
