Nominations for this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) have been extended until Tuesday at 10:00am (local time), the set weights plus penalties race supporting a dual Group 1 program on Saturday.

Of the current nominations in the fillies-and-mares’ feature there’s a mix of local and interstate talent including a trio for the Ballarat-based Darren Weir.

Weir has an excellent record on this day having prepared last year’s Australasian Oaks winner May’s Dream as well as Platelet for her Robert Sangster Stakes win in 2013 as well as her second in the same race 12 months later.

His three Queen Of The South hopes this autumn are Atlantis Dream coming off a second to Silverball over the Flemington mile from April 11, third over the same track and distance behind Chiquada last Saturday Ava’s Delight and Lady Cumquat who ran eighth in that same Anzac Day lead-up.

Chiquada is also in the Queen Of The South Stakes mix this weekend shooting for back-to-back wins in her first run at Morphettville, Ciaron Maher’s Fast ‘N’ Famous six-year-old boasting three wins and two seconds from eight previous 1600m runs.

Also coming off a nice lead-up run in Melbourne is Perth raider Bippo No Bungus for Ascot-based Neville Parnham.

Parnham bought the five-year-old daughter of Dubawi to Victoria for an autumn campaign and she’s run second twice including in Bendigo’s Gold Bracelet before a last start fourth to Amorino in the Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield on April 18.

Also coming out of an Anniversary Vase run is the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Marianne, the Darci Brahma four-year-old finishing just over a length away third to the winner.

That was her third top three run on the trot following a second behind the highly-spruiked Noble Protector in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) at Flemington and third to the same imported mare in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley in late March.

Some of the best local Adelaide hopes in the Queen Of The South Stakes nominations this year include the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Cavaloce and Phillip Stokes’ Fastnet Rock four-year-old Held Hostage.

Other notable hopes include Robbie Griffiths’ recent Sunline Stakes runner-up Girl In Flight, VOBIS Gold Reef runner-up behind Saturday’s Schweppes Oaks favourite Fontein Ruby Jurasound and Choisir filly Japhils who won the Listed Nitschke Stakes over 1400m here only last weekend.
