Nostradamus Wins 2015 Gold Coast Guineas – Results

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes training team enjoyed back-to-back wins on the Gold Coast to close the card in Queensland this Anzac Day, their always-promising but until now under-delivering colt Nostradamus winning the last with a Gold Coast Guineas 2015 victory.

Race 8 was the day’s marquee event and Team Hawkes won the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) with the now Doomben Cup-bound Leebaz before Race 9 concluded the action with the three-year-olds facing off in the $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

Away quick from his nice barrier four draw with champion hoop Hugh Bowman aboard was Medaglia D’Oro colt Nostradamus, co-trainer Michael Hawkes describing the Guineas as the young galloper’s D-Day.

“It was D-Day today,” he said.

“We came up here to have a crack.

“He’s always had the ability…but he’s done a great job today.

“I’ll give credit to Hughie (Bowman)…he gave him a gun ride. He waited and waited.”

It was the horse’s fourth run of the season and the first time he finished in the money, let alone first.

His lead-up run was a sixth behind Delectation in the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Randwick in the wet on Day 2 of The Championships on April 11.

He proved a dry-tracker today though, relishing a Good-rated course on the Gold Coast to break a drought that went back to his first-up Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) win at Rosehill in August last year.

In-form Sunshine Coast visitor Executed led them around in the GC Guineas today with the likes of Stuart Kendrick’s Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce winner from last May Time For War and the Kiwi raider Huka Eagle just off him.

On the turn with 450m left to go, Executed was first around with plenty of chances in the mix right up on the speed then and challenging.

Nostradamus quickly burst onto the scene, pushing his way into the finish after a patient ride from Bowman to hit the front and lead from Time For War who was first-up after a failed 14th to Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne during the spring.

Nostradamus ($5.50) held his spot and scored victory from Time For War ($5.50) while a fast finishing Traveston Girl ($6) snared third to round out the Gold Coast Guineas trifecta.

Tony Gollan’s returning Flying Spur filly Traveston Girl will improve off the run when she gets up out over more distance, the Hollindale run her first run since finishing under a length away second to Amicus in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield last October.

Plans are now up in the air for the Gold Coast Guineas winner, Hawkes confirming they would re-evaluate original plans to send him home to Sydney.

“He was going home tomorrow night but we might have to rethink that,” he said.

“We’ll make a decision over the next 24 hours, but it’s been a great day today with two winners and a second.”
