Dual Guineas Aim for 2015 Gunsynd Classic Winner Worthy Cause

Sunshine Coast-based horseman John Zielke has massive plans this year with his 2015 Gunsynd Classic winner Worthy Cause who will be set for a Flemington raid in Melbourne this spring after a dual Guineas campaign in Queensland through the winter.

The progressive Choisir colt had his ninth career start and his second at the Gold Coast Racecourse on A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day, showing off a blistering turn of foot to put them away in the $125,000 Group 3 Surfers Paradise RSL Gunsynd Classic (1800m).

Ridden by long-time friend of Zielke, Justin Stanley, Worthy Cause was the market mover at Ladbrokes.com.au and the Races.com.au tip to win, and he saluted for both.

The in-form up-and-coming stayer went into the race on the back of a 1350m win at Doomben only last Saturday, and having done it before Zielke was always confident there was no issue stepping up to the 1800m in the Gunsynd.

“I was always confident this horse could do that,” he said.

“I’ve done this before from 1350m up to the 1800m. I know what I need to do.”

Worthy Cause proved his class at the Gold Coast during the summer when third in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) last December, but this time he was the one taking the bikkies.

Settled at the back of the field, which was led around by eventual mid-field placed Invinzabeel, Worthy Cause was put to sleep by Stanley before putting himself into the picture over the closing 400m.

Invinzabeel held the lead round the turn into the straight but quickly dropped off as Stanley bought Worthy Cause ($4.50) up on the outside, the eventual winner charging home and running past them to win by two lengths.

In second was the Peter Moody-trained Upham ($17) who raced wide throughout and was brave in defeat while third was the Ben Ahrens-trained roughie Chillin With Dylan ($31), another backmarker who made up excellent late ground.

While the Gunsynd Classic has traditionally been used as a lead-up into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day in June, Zielke has different plans for Worthy Cause.

The horse will run in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) back home before heading to Doomben on June 6 for the $400,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on the same day.

“He’s got the biggest turn of foot,” Zielke said.

“This horse will run 2000m and beyond.

“I’ve got the two Guineas in mind for Queensland then Flemington in the spring.”

Zielke also plans to keep Stanley on the horse all the way to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

“Justin knows this horse perfectly,” he said.

“He’s one of the best riders in this country, he just doesn’t get the opportunities.

“I’ll be sticking with him all the way through to Flemington.”
