2015 Gold Coast Bracelet Winner Bohemian Lass Heads to Oaks

Sydney’s always-enthusiastic trainer Gai Waterhouse has confirmed a 2015 Queensland Oaks campaign for her impressive Gold Coast Bracelet winner Bohemian Lass this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

The O’Reilly filly put the writing on the wall that she could do something special when bought to Queensland last time out in Sydney, when the New Zealand expat had her maiden run down under at Warwick Farm on April 8.

Imported from New Zealand, where she has Group 2 form, the progressive staying type was runner-up over the mile behind Invinzabeel first-up.

She improved on that today in the $125,000 Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) on A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day.

Ridden patiently by Blake Shinn, the former Kiwi settled nicely to sit second behind Tony Gollan’s previously undefeated Sheiswhatsheis who flew out of the gates and led until the closing few hundred metres.

Shinn turned the Gold Coast Bracelet into a genuine staying test for his filly and Sheiswhatsheis, asking her to quicken putting the foot down at the 500m before they went into the turn.

The two fillies led going into the straight going stride-for-stride before Shinn really let down on Bohemian Lily ($3.80) who outstayed her rivals to win the Bracelet from the fast-closing Ben Currie-trained Col ‘N’ Lil ($11), who tracked fourth throughout before running home down the outside.

Three-time winner Sheiswhatsheis ($5.50) did well to hang on to finish off the Gold Coast Bracelet Trifecta in third after using up lots of energy right from her flying jump from the gates.

Waterhouse was suitably impressed with the effort of Bohemian Lily second-up who she has targeting the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), run over the amended distance at Doomben Racecourse on May 30.

“We had her head over (here) specifically to target the Oaks,” she said.

“Very impressed, the way she ran the other day.

“She has done really well since coming north, her coat has come on good.

“She just outstayed them today.”

Tinto completed the Gold Coast Bracelet – Queensland Oaks double last winter, and Bohemian Lily is now set to be the favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au to repeat the feat 12 months on.

The next race on Bohemian Lily’s program is likely to be the $175,000 Group 2 The Roses (2000m) up in Brisbane on Doomben 10,000 Day, May 23.

Shinn was also pleased with the Bracelet winner’s performance and hopes to stay on her throughout the carnival heading into the Oaks.

“It was a good performance going forward,” he said.

“Gai’s had the Queensland Oaks earmarked right from the start of the prep with this filly.”
