Set to run as Flemington Race 6 at 4:00pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) features a field of 14 led in the Ladbrokes.com.au markets by All I Survey who has been backed in early from $4 to $3.70.

Pat Carey’s Domesday gelding jumps from barrier eight chasing his second career win at start number seven, and comes off a brave third to Manapine in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2500m) at the track from April 11.

There are five other single figure hopes in the VRC St Leger odds including the rails-drawn General Zabeel ($4.80) who won over 2100m last time out, Authoritarian ($6.50) also drawn well in gate four and coming off a mile and a half victory at Geelong, and yet another last start winner Zatopaz ($7.50).

So will one of the best in betting get the job done for the punters or is there an upset VRC St Leger result due from a longer priced chance including Robbie Laing’s Group 1 performed Cuban Fighter ($15) or the Danny O’Brien-trained General James ($15)?

#4 All I Survey ($3.70)

We think the bookies have these markets pretty spot on and the favourite is hard to tip against from a good barrier (eight) that gives jockey Rhys McLeod options. The horse blew the start here over 2500m in the Galilee Final last time out and was still beaten under three lengths by two nice types to run third. The rest of the field were way back and if he gets away well from the gate, with the extra metres going up to the 2800m, will be hard to hold off.

#5 Zatopaz ($7.50)

Drawn one outside the favourite this galloper should get a nice run with Nick Hall aboard the consistent Bjorn Baker-trained Zabeel gelding who is bred to stay and can run all day. His lead-up form in Sydney is good with two seconds over 2300m and 2100m before his victory over the 2600m defeating Colour Of Money by two and a half lengths on April 14. Eats up the metres, is up in class for his maiden Adelaide run but the distance will put him right in the finish.

#9 General Zabeel ($4.80)

So many to choose from for third but General Zabeel is in the box seat with barrier one for jockey Mark Zahra who replaces Christian Reith aboard the fellow son of Zabeel. The staying pedigree should come out to shine here and can improve on the 2.5 length Goulbourn win in a maiden last time out with confidence there now.
