Running as Race 7 at 3:17pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Smeg Victory Stakes (1200m) field features 12 sprinters with the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Ball Of Muscle at $4.80.

There is plenty to like about the Joe Pride-trained favourite from Sydney who has come up trumps with barrier three and runs second-up looking to keep his flawless second-up record (3-3-0-0) intact.

Last time out the ultra-consistent Dubawi four-year-old was runner-up to Hard Romp over 1000m at Flemington and with some more metres and fitness on his side now he’ll be hard to hold off.

So what can beat him?

The Victory Stakes odds at Ladbrokes have a host of other single-figure chances out for the upset including the defending champion Temple Of Boom ($6) for Tony Gollan and a little shorter the returning Ciaron Maher-trained mare Srikandi ($5) last seen running third in the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane last winter.

To help you sort the genuine contenders from the Victory Stakes pretenders this weekend we’ve got our tips on the feature race that you can lock in at Ladbrokes.com.au enjoying up to $250 in bonus bets as a first-time depositing customer also!

1st

#11 Ball Of Muscle ($4.80)

Happy to stick with the favourite to get the job done in a close market as he ticks far too many boxes to ignore. Barrier three looks ideal and Blake Shinn is in the saddle. Carried 60kg last time out when beaten by a nostril flare first-up over 1000m at Flemington. Hasn’t been to the Gold Coat but the 1200m will suit much better and he’s got a gun record over the distance (4-2-1-1). Will also relish the drop back to 58.5kg under weight-for-age conditions, and he hasn’t run out of the top two in his past six starts. Undefeated second-up (3-3-0-0), and while he’s up in class, think he’s ready to handle tougher company on way to better things this winter.

2nd

#5 Rocket To Glory ($15)

The shorter price is on Gollan’s reigning Victory Stakes winner Temple Of Boom, but at double-figures his in-form Shovhog six-year-old looks excellent value. The gelding has won his past two on the trot including over this track and distance on March 12 giving him a total of two wins and a third from three previous 1200m Gold Coast runs. Overall he’s had 18 goes over the distance for five wins, and is a 46-start veteran only just starting to show his best form. Last start was a victory over Cape Kidnappers in the Listed Chief de Beers Handicap (1100m) at Doomben and think he will surprise a few from gate four here even if Gollan’s taken Tegan Harrison off to ride the Group 1 winning stablemate; apprentice Luke Tarrant is the replacement rider and could come close to bagging a Group 2.

3rd

#12 Srikandi ($5)

She’s on the rails and the only female galloper in the field so meets the boys two kilos better in the weights, both big ticks for Maher’s four-year-old daughter of Dubawi. She has had eight runs for six wins, a second and a third and returns to racing off a lengthy spell. Last start was back in June last year when third to River Lad and Temple Of Boom, both rivals on the weekend, in Queensland’s richest race. She handles all track conditions with awesome form on Good (6-4-1-1) and Heavy (2-2-0-0) so is super versatile. Won a lead-up trial on April 14 to help get her race fit as she attempts her fifth win from as many starts over the 1200m.
