Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
In the closing race on AD Hollindale Stakes Day this weekend in Queensland the three-year-old sprinters face off in the Gold Coast Guineas 2015, betting tips for the set weights clash found below.
The field for the Gold Coast Race 9 at 4:28pm (AEST), the $125,000 Group 3 Attwood Marshall Lawyers Gold Coast Guineas (1200m), is still at capacity despite the early scratching of Sarajevo and Palazzo Pubblico.
Two of the four emergencies will come into the starting line-up now with Tony Gollan’s undefeated Bearskin in gate two and the Trevor Thompson-trained Rising Luck in double digits with a jockey still to be confirmed.
Heading the Gold Coast Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $4.50 for the win is Glen Boss’s mount Miss Cover Girl who has won two of her past three starts going back to late February.
The Kelly Schweida-trained, Brisbane-based Monashee Mountain filly travelled to Sydney last time out in her 11th career start and handled the trip as well as a step up in class well with her Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) win in the wet.
Boss was aboard that day and now back in the Sunshine State at a track she’s won three from four at before, the money is all on Miss Cover Girl.
Another filly is the second best in the latest Gold Coast Guineas betting markets with the Group 1 placed Traveston Girl ($6.50) racing for the first time since her second in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne during the spring.
On the drift after originally sitting top of the markets with Miss Cover Girl is then Time For War ($5.50 out to $7) who is one of three $7 hopes, the Stuart Kendrick-trained Snitzel colt first-up and boasting a nice record when resuming (3-2-0-0) and form around super colt Brazen Beau to boot.
So will one of the two top fancied fillies get the job done on Saturday or is there an upset Gold Coast Guineas result on the cards from the likes of the Kiwi raider Huka Eagle ($7) with Group 1 form back home or even the huge market mover Better Not Blue ($101 to $18)?
#12 Traveston Girl ($6.50)
Gollan has his top rider Tegan Harrison on this Flying Spur filly who races for the first time since her Group 1 Thousand Guineas second over the Caulfield mile last October. She hasn’t raced in Queensland since July last year at Doomben, but she beat Miss Cover Girl by over five lengths in that run so has huge ability. She is likely looking for more metres, but her record also shows she is undefeated over the 1200m so first-up and fresh the distance should be a non-issue.
#10 Miss Cover Girl ($4.50)
The favourite ticks plenty of boxes and is a must-include even from the barrier in this all-filly quinella. She boasts plenty of class and if she gets to the front from the gate, going forward the obvious option for Boss, has claims to lead all-the-way and post her eighth career win at start number 12. Group 3 winner against her own kind last time out beating Peeping, who went on for a fifth in the James Carr Stakes over 1400m last weekend.
#5 Beau Jet ($17)
While there are plenty of nice roughies to finish off the placings, Beau Jet comes off a first-up win when resuming that he can improve on. Steven O’dea’s Jet Spur gelding ran on strongly to beat Feels Like Home over the 1110m at Doomben from barrier 13 of 14 and is wide again here but showed he can handle a double-digit draw. Undefeated first-up (2-2-0-0) and also second-up (1-1-0-0) and has won four from five overall. Hasn’t been to the Gold Coast, or been on a rain-affected track so how he handles it Soft will be key. Damien Oliver has the ride though, which can help.
