A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
David Vandyke’s progressive mare Arabian Gold has opened narrow favourite to win the 2015 AD Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast this Saturday.
A capacity field is engaged for this year’s edition of the traditional Doomben Cup lead-up with the final spot in the 14-starter line-up for the $358,000 Group 2 Sky Thoroughbred Central A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) belonging to Arabian Gold.
She is due to jump from a nice barrier four draw with Damien Oliver in the saddle, the Sydney-based daughter of Dubawi debuting at the track and also having her first 1800m win.
Arabian Gold has winning form up to 2000m however, having taken out the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival before her brave second to Tinto in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).
She won first-up at Rosehill last September in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) but hasn’t won again since, a drought she’s tipped to break with Ladbrokes.com.au installing her as the early $4.60 favourite in their Hollindale Stakes odds.
Hot on her heels at $5 occupying the second line of Hollindale Stakes betting is then fellow mare Silent Achiever who has work to do from a wide barrier 13 draw.
Kerrin McEvoy is down to ride Roger James’s Kiwi-trained Zabeel six-year-old, the four-time Group 1 winner last seen running sixth to Hartnell when unsuccessfully defending her title in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill in late March.
She is in Queensland now and working well ahead of the Hollindale, where James is confident she’ll be competitive.
In a tight market there are five other single-figure hopes to win the Hollindale including equal $6.50 third favourites Hooked and Pornichet, the latter sitting as the third emergency.
Hooked jumps from barrier two with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, John Thompson’s Casino Prince stallion out to improve on a Doncaster Mile 13th last time out when chasing his first win since the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day last year.
French import Pornichet meanwhile surprised many when missing out on a confirmed run in the Hollindale Stakes, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vespone four-year-old having won the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) two back before his Doncaster Mile fifth on April 6.
Also under $10 are then the Chris Waller-trained Kingston Town Classic winner Moriarty ($7.50), Waller’s former Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur ($8) in gate three with last weekend’s All Aged Stakes winning hoop Jim Cassidy aboard and the first emergency awaiting a scratching Leebaz ($8) who ran a competitive second in the JRA Plate over 2000m at Randwick last weekend.
For punters looking for the value outside of the shorter fancies there is a host of other runners at double figures with genuine claims including another Group 1 winner from the Waller stable Foreteller ($10), local Helen Page-trained hope Rudy ($12) coming off a Doncaster Mile fourth and last start Doomben winner Sir Moments ($17).
