Time For War Tops Capacity 2015 Gold Coast Guineas Field

Closing out an exciting nine-race program at the Gold Coast Racecourse to kick off the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival on Saturday is the Gold Coast Guineas 2015 where Time For War wears the number one saddlecloth in a full field.

Due to jump as Race 9 at 4:28pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Attwood Marshall Lawyers Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) has attracted a capacity field of 16 starters plus four emergency runners needing an early scratching to get in.

Up the top of the field with Blake Shinn to ride from a wide barrier 10 draw is Stuart Kendrick’s Group 1 performed Snitzel colt Time For War.

First-up and boasting a good record when resuming of two wins from three previous starts off a spell, Time For War was last seen running a disappointing 14th when outclassed in Melbourne last November in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

He is tipped for improvement back in Queensland this campaign and shoots for his first win since beating subsequent Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Brazen Beau, who is racing at Royal Ascot in England later this year, home in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben last May.

Along with the nice first-up record, Time For War also ran well in a recent trial at Sunshine Coast when second behind last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner River Lad over 850m on March 31.

A host of other exciting three-year-olds are also first-up in the Gold Coast Guineas this weekend including the John O’Shea-trained Sarajevo out wide in barrier 17 (into 14) who has last Saturday’s All Aged Stakes winning hoop Jim Cassidy in the saddle, Tony Pike’s New Zealand Group 1 placegetter Huka Eagle and Tony Gollan’s Flying Spur filly Traveston Girl.

Drawn in gate 12 for top hoop Tegan Harrison, Traveston Girl is undefeated over Saturday’s distance after two previous 1200m wins and races for the first time since her brave second when under a length off Amicus in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield last October.

Gollan has also accepted for fellow filly Feels Like Home in gate nine for jockey Jim Byrne, the daughter of More Than Ready second-up after finishing runner-up to Beau Jet over 1110m at Doomben on April 11.

The other fillies taking on the boys in the Guineas along with Gollan’s two are Noel Doyle’s local hope Aimee, the Desleigh Forster-trained Amizade, Sam Kavanagh’s returning Sydney raider Palazzo Pubblico, Sea Shells for Gold Coast trainer John Morrisey and Miss Cover Girl.

Drawn in barrier 14 with Glen Boss aboard, Kelly Schweida’s Monashee Mountain filly Miss Cover Girl has won three of her four previous Gold Coast starts and three from five over Saturday’s distance.

Her latest run was over the 1200m on a Heavy (8) Sydney track at Randwick when she beat home Peeping on April 6 to win the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes, form she’ll be looking to bring back to Queensland this weekend.

Other notable Gold Coast Guineas hopes include Brad Herne’s rails-drawn Mr Cha Cha last seen finishing fifth to Time For War in last year’s Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes making Saturday his first run in over a year, the Team Hawkes-trained Nostradamus and Beau Jet shooting for another win this time in with Damien Oliver booked for the ride.
