Capacity 2015 AD Hollindale Stakes Field Released

Early signs are strong for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival as the first notable race of the festival, Saturday’s AD Hollindale Stakes 2015 on the Gold Coast has drawn a bumper capacity field.

Due to run as Race 8 at 3:52pm (AEST), this year’s $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) features 14 confirmed starters plus four emergencies awaiting a scratching to gain a run.

The depth of the AD Hollindale Stakes field is made evident by the strength of the emergencies alone with JRA Plate runner-up Leebaz, Peter Moody’s Wish Come True, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Pornichet and Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane Handicap winning Queensland Hopfgarten all missing out on spot in the starting line-up.

The highest-rated runner in the weight-for-age feature, which is the traditional lead-up to the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 9, is 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon.

The veteran Lloyd Williams-owned champion hasn’t won a race since his victory in the famous Flemington feature three years ago however and was disappointing last time out when, a 66/1 odds, he ran 14th of 15 runners in Caulfield’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on April 4.

A host of the former Melbourne Cup winner’s Hollindale Stakes rivals though come off far better lead-up form, including one of the four Chris Waller-trained acceptors Hawkspur.

The former Queensland Derby winning Purrealist gelding is now a five-year-old and has run third in his two latest runs over 2000m in Group 3 company at Rosehill, most recently behind Pornichet in the Neville Sellwood on March 28.

He’s a gun over the 1800m however with two wins and a second form his previous three runs over Saturday’s distance and is tipped for improvement.

Waller’s quartet also features last year’s Underwood Stakes winner Foreteller who has won four from nine over 1800m, Kingston Town Classic champ in Perth last December Moriarty who comes off a first-up eighth in the George Ryder Stakes over 1500m in Sydney and rising 10-year-old I’m Imposing drawn wide in barrier 14.

There are two mares taking on the boys in the Hollindale this year with the Damien Oliver to ride the David Vandyke-trained Arabian Gold (barrier six) and Kerrin McEvoy on Roger James’s multiple Group 1 winning Kiwi raider Silent Achiever drawn out in 13.

Silent Achiever pleased Roger in her track work over the weekend and heads towards the Doomben Cup where she’ll be shooting for a fifth Group 1 win, her third in Australia after completing last year’s Ranvet Stakes – The BMW double.

Two runners come off a last start run this year with the in-form Scott Brunton-trained Mornington Cup winning Tough Speed seven-year-old Banca Mo (barrier five) and Brisbane’s Sir Moments, the Choisir four-year-old having won over 1630m at Doomben on April 11.

The other big name is then of course the Helen Page-trained local Rudy, the Red Dazzler four-year-old coming off a brave fourth to Japan’s Real Impact in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) from the start of the month.
