One of a host of Group 3 support races on the program, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Moreton Hire Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) is due to run as Gold Coast Race 6 at 2:42pm (AEST) and features a full field of 16 plus an emergency in One More Magic.

Former champion Queensland jockey, Munce now prepares a small stable of horses including exciting Wicked Style colt Wicked Intent who he rode four times before taking over as trainer.

The two-year-old is back to the track in the Ken Russell on the weekend having last been seen running sixth beaten only two lengths by upset winner Le Chef at the Gold Coast in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) back in January.

That was his third run at the Gold Coast following a win over 900m on debut last October and his second to Mishani Honcho in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stkaes (1200m) back in late December when ridden by Munce.

On Saturday Munce has Damian Browne, one of Sunshine Coast’s best, in the saddle with the duo drawn in gate eight in the sprint feature.

Wicked Intent gives the fitness advantage away to a host of his Ken Russell Memorial Classic rivals on the weekend including a number of interstate raiders such as the John O’Shea-trained Sampeah.

Godolphin’s Exceed And Excel colt from Sydney has come up trumps with barrier one and Hugh Bowman riding following the Group 1 performer’s third to Jameka in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in mid-March.

There are six last start winners in the field this year including the Sunshine Coast-trained duo of Monanta Star and The Wildman drawn side-by-side in barriers six and five respectively.

Stuart Kendrick prepares consistent Reward For Effort colt Montana Star who is yet to finish out of the money having won two of his four starts and finished runner-up in the other two.

His latest was a 1350m Doomben win on April 4 run on a Heavy (10) making him an imposing force if there is rain around again this weekend.

Kendrick will also saddle-up Sebring filly Typing drawn right out in gate 15 for Glen Boss who comes off a third to their stablemate Montana Star from the start of the month.

The Wildman meanwhile has Tegan Harrison in the saddle, Mick Mair’s Champions Gallery gelding last seen winning over 1300m at his home track in his maiden run over further than 1200m.

Two back he was third in another Sunshine Coast run on a Heavy (10) course won by Blueberry Hill who is a rival again this weekend.

Brisbane’s Liam Birchley trains undefeated Myboycharlie filly Blueberry Hill who will shoot for her third win from as many starts when she jumps from barrier 10 with Larry Cassidy aboard in the Ken Russell.

Other notable hopes include Bruce Hill’s progressive local Redsson (4-2-2-0) in his maiden black-type assignment, Clarry ConnersLook To The Stars coming off a Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) fifth in Sydney when beaten under a length and maiden filly Military Miss for the Gold Coast’s Gillian Heinrich.
