Nominations for the Gold Coast’s AD Hollindale Stakes 2015 in Queensland this weekend are now out and headlined by a host of Doomben Cup hopefuls that are Brisbane-bound in the winter.
The $358,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m), one of two Group 2s on the Gold Coast line-up on Saturday, is the traditional lead-up race to the lucrative $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) running this year on May 9.
Run under weight-for-age conditions like the Brisbane Group 1 over 200m further, the A.D. Hollindale Stakes has produced six of the past 10 Doomben Cup winners including Streama who completed the double for the late Guy Walter last year.
Sydney’s top trainer Chris Waller will shoot for that same double, which his horse Metal Bender (2010) also completed in recent years, having entered for four 2015 Doomben Cup hopefuls in this year’s Hollindale.
Waller’s four hopes are 2013 Hollindale and Doomben Cup runner-up Foreteller, Group 1 Kingston Town Classic winner Moriarty, former Queensland Derby champ Hawkspur, and rising 10-year-old I’m Imposing down for his Queensland race debut.
Possibly on the short back-up for Team Hawkes meanwhile is Zabeel gelding Leebaz who was a brave second behind Gypsy Diamond in the Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) at Randwick last Saturday.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run into the Hollindale are Tony McEvoy’s six-year-old Mouro who was runner-up in Adelaide’s CS Hayes over the mile on March 9 and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet who won the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes two back before a Doncaster Mile fifth in Group 1 company on April 6.
Fourth past the post in the Doncaster this year meanwhile was the Gold Coast-based Rudy for Helen Page, the progressive four-year-old the best of the local Hollindale hopes on the weekend.
Other notable Hollindale Stakes entries this season include last start Mornington Cup winner over the mile and a half on May 28 Banca Mo, Easter Cup runner-up at the start of the month Escado, former Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon looking to return to form finally and the Bart & James Cummings-trained veteran Precedence first-up after a Melbourne Cup sixth last November.
Of the mares looking to go back-to-back in the Hollindale some of the more exciting prospects include Arabian Gold who ran a Doncaster Mile sixth last time out, Sandown Classic runner-up Epingle and of course Silent Achiever.
Roger James’s ace O’Reilly six-year-old is a multiple Group 1 winner who was last seen running sixth just over two lengths off Hartnell in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill in late March.
The 2015 AD Hollindale Stakes final field and barrier draw are due out on Wednesday so stay tuned.
