It was $41 outsider Daytona Grey from the stables of Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas in Adelaide today who was best home in the opening Group race on the Morphettville card, the roughie bursting through in the closing stages to win the RN Irwin Stakes 2015.
Markets for this year’s $115,000 Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) were firmly led by the dual Group 1 winning mare at the track, Platelet ($2.35) coming off a win over 955m at Moonee Valley, who jumped away well from the barriers from her outside draw with Brad Rawiller aboard.
She and the Ken Sweeney-trained Riziz, an in-form six-year-old coming off a second in the Oakbank Stakes, pressed forward and the older galloper worked to get to the front and lead in the short-distance sprint setting a cracking pace.
Artie Schiller five-year-old Daytona Grey, coming off a sixth to fellow RN Irwin Stakes runner The Messina Nymph in the Listed Manihi Stakes (1100m) at the track and distance from March 28, meanwhile was tracking second-last in the seven-starter field.
Jockey Clare Lindop had the mount on the roughie Daytona Grey, and she gave him a very patient, well-timed ride knowing full well he had the finishing power to round them up in the end.
Riziz held the front from the Tony McEvoy-trained Commands mare The Messina Nymph with Karacatis in third while Darren Weir’s favourite Platelet was caught deep running fourth, the shortie in betting not displaying her usual impressive turn-of-foot.
The Messina Nymph went to the lead then with Platelet still the widest runner into the straight, Riziz going up to fight it out with the front runner.
Out of nowhere however Lindop burst through and swept to the lead with Daytona Grey ($41) who raced off and went on to win easily from the market mover Riziz ($6) with The Messina Nymph ($4.80) holding for third in the massive upset.
Twelve months ago Platelet, who dropped off to run second last when six and a half lengths away sixth today, was runner-up to Sydney visitor Driefontein in the RN Irwin Stakes.
She went on to run second in both the Robert Sangster and The Goodwood when defending her Group 1 titles from the previous year, and even though she was flat in the Irwin this autumn the Robert Sangster is again a target.
Daytona Grey after his upset today could also be bound for the second of those Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival classics, the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) run back at Morphettville on May 16.
The Irwin Stakes was his first win since taking out a Benchmark 90 over the 1100m at the track last July, Daytona Grey now boasting 10 wins from 32 starts.
The best mares in the Irwin Stakes finish are expected to face Platelet when she seeks atonement in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on May 2nd including The Messina Nymph who had no luck in the run today.
Joining her in the Robert Sangster Stakes field is also likely to be the Jim Taylor-trained Magnifisio, the Magnus five-year-old tipped to improve on her fourth in the Irwin when beaten just over three lengths after making a late run but running out of time.
