Two Listed features highlight the Caulfield race program this Saturday for one of the final Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival meets, the Anniversary Vase 2015 closing the card as Race 10.
Due to jump at 5:20pm (AEST), this year’s $120,000 Listed Anniversary Vase (1400m) originally drew the capacity 15 starters plus four emergencies.
Two of the four spares get a start today with Stratcombe and Pyrrolic coming in to replace the scratching Hosting and Mutual Trust.
Leading the Anniversary Vase betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a short $3 is Under The Louvre, Robert Smerdon’s Excellent Art stallion on the drift but still a big hope after a Listed Mornington win over 1200m first-up on March 28.
Runner-up to Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) here at Caulfield earlier in the autumn, the four-year-old should be improving again off what he did to win the Hareeba Stakes and can overcome the horror outside draw.
There are just three other single figure chances in the latest markets including the big mover in from $6.50 to $5.50, Marianne.
Dwayne Dunn rides the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Darci Brahma mare who has drawn a treat in barrier three, the four-year-old looking to continue an ace record at the track (4-1-3-0).
Two back she finished runner-up to Noble Protector in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) at Flemington then went to Moonee Valley for a third behind the same highly-spruiked mare in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m).
She’s up against the boys here but drops in class, and going down to 1400m (5-1-3-0) should also suit this ace Each Way chance.
The other hopes under $10 for the win are then Sistine Demon ($8.50) in the second widest barrier and Mirage ($8.50) who will get a better run in transit from a lovely barrier four draw.
Andrew Noblet’s Excites gelding Sistine Demon has won five from nine over the 1400m before and comes off two good runs over the distance, including his third to Watermans Bay in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) here on April 4.
Mirage meanwhile is a lightly-raced Hard Spun five-year-old from the Peter Moody stables who has won four of his five career starts to date.
Winner of the Listed Manfred Stakes (1200m) here in February last year, his only defeat to date was a fifth to Under The Louvre in the Hareeba Stakes last time out when first-up off a year break but expect him to atone when up over the 1400m again.
#7 Marianne ($5.50)
She’s the market mover drawn to perfection in barrier three and think she can get the job done here. Her form around Noble Protector is excellent and worth following for sure after what that mare did to run a Group 1 third in the mud last Saturday. She’ll get the run of the race form that draw and even though it’s been a while between drinks her two seconds and a win from three other runs over this track and distance suggest she’s a big hope at a better price than the favourite.
#3 Under The Louvre ($3)
Plenty to like about the punters’ pick here, but that barrier is pretty damn awful. His two runs back this time in though have been outstanding including the Group 1 second in late February at Caulfield. He’s won two and finished second twice in his four other runs at the track, and comes off a win so is in form. 44% win rate and 78% place rate are also excellent, only has to overcome the gate to win.
#13 Mirage ($8.50)
Another Moody improver with a beautiful barrier (4), the galloper is lightly raced for his age with just the five previous runs, four of which he’s won. A black type winner at the track in February before winning over 1400m when taken to Sha Tin in March last year. Had a year away from racing but returned with a credible fifth finishing under three lengths off the favourite for today’s rematch Under The Louvre in the Hareeba Stakes. Will be fitter and better for that run where there were excuses fresh.
