Japan Racing Association Plate 2015 Tips

A quality field of staying types will take to Randwick on All Aged Stakes Day this Saturday in the 2015 Japan Racing Association Plate, betting tips for the handicap clash found below.

Due to run as Race 5 at 3:05pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) features a dozen hopefuls with the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the Team Hawkes-trained Leebaz.

The second heaviest-weighted with 58.5kg, the Zabeel gelding will get a soft run from barrier three with Tommy Berry in the saddle and is ready to hit the front and turn the 2000m into a staying test.

Can the five-year-old handle the kilos and atone for his last start 11th when carrying only 50.5kg in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) last start?

It’s a field of notable size and depth for the favourite to defeat however with three other single figure hopes.

Occupying the second line of JRA Plate betting at $4.60 is Malice who is winding up now second-up, followed by market mover Our Voodoo Prince ($7) for Chris Waller and Kourkam ($7) who is a winning chance from barrier two.

So will one of the top fancies get the job done or is there value further down the markets in the likes of Waller’s top weight Index Linked ($12) or Peter & Paul Snowden’s Group 1 performed mare Gypsy Diamond ($11)?

#1 Index Linked ($12)

Last weekend’s Sydney Cup quinella-winning trainer Waller has two in the JRA Plate and the top weight is the longer priced of the two. Grand Marshal showed in last week’s Group 1 over the 3200m that a roughie stablemate is worth a punt however and we are tipping that result again here even though this seven-year-old has the hefty kilos to carry round. Forget the Mornington Cup failure (10th over 2400m). The drop back to 2000m is firmly in Index Linked’s favour and his record over the distance is very nice (7-4-1-0). Has finished first and then second in his two previous Randwick runs and was a dual black-type winner over 2000m and then 1950m in Victoria earlier this autumn.

#6 Our Voodoo Prince ($7)

Waller’s other runner is the early JRA Plate market mover and even from barrier 10 of 12 looks a big chance. Damien Oliver rides the fellow seven-year-old veteran who is another gun over 2000m (8-3-1-2). Hard to look past for a place based on that and his second in the Neville Sellwood over the distance at Rosehill on March 28 last time out. He is building for a better run and that could be this weekend is our guess.

#2 Leebaz ($3.30)

The favourite is drifting but still ticks plenty of boxes. Barrier three gives him the run of the race and the chance to go up front if that’s what Berry’s tactics are. Big weight increase from the Doncaster to this but a much easier field. Drops in class but needs to as he goes up to 2000m for just the second time. Right run and he’s a chance for the favourite backers.
